Seabird colonies around St. Matthew Island in the Bering Sea contain over 1.5 million breeding birds. Despite protection by international treaties the seabirds remain potentially vulnerable to oil and gas development in nearby areas. In support of proposed offshore oil exploration in Navarin Basin a logistical base site was proposed for St. Matthew Island (with an airstrip intended at the southeast end). Seabird studies under natural conditions were needed before considering the effects of man-made disturbances (e.g. helicopter traffic and support facility construction). Therefore population studies were undertaken at St. Matthew and Hall Islands where large seabird colonies exist.
