Many publications are available on GovInfo that are not in one of the collections listed on the What's Available page. These publications are part of two general collections, either the Additional Government Publications (GPO) collection or the Miscellaneous Government Publications (GOVPUB) collection. They can be accessed by navigating to their landing page from the Browse A to Z list or the Browse by Category page, or the individual publications can be accessed through basic or advanced search.

For example, you can access NIST Publications by:

  • Navigating to the landing page where there are links to each series of publications in search results
  • Conducting a basic search for keywords or field operators
  • Conducting an advanced search and selecting Additional Government Publications or Other under Refine by Collection

In addition, GovInfo contains "hybrid" collections that may comprise both standard collection publications and GPO or GOVPUB collection publications. Examples are the Senate Journal collection, which includes publications from the Congressional Serial Set (SERIALSET) and Additional Government Publications (GPO) collections, or the Congressional Reports collection, which includes publications from the Congressional Reports (CRPT), the Congressional Serial Set (SERIALSET), and the Miscellaneous Government Publications (GOVPUB) collections. This is important to know because URLs and search fields may differ slightly. Not all collections can be searched using "collection-specific" search fields because the packages may not contain the necessary metadata to support those search fields.

Metadata Fields and Values for Select Other Publications

Metadata fields and values can be used to increase the relevancy of your searches. The metadata fields available for select publications are listed in the table below. Metadata fields and values are used throughout GovInfo for

  • Narrowing Your Search,
  • Browsing Government Publications,
  • Field Operators,
  • Advanced Search, and
  • Display on Details Pages.

Metadata fields and values can be entered into the Basic Search box using field operators. The field operators available for the GPO and GOVPUB collections are listed in the table below, along with examples for each metadata field. Using Field Operators

Some of these metadata fields are made available for use in Advanced Search. The metadata values can be entered in the same format for the fields available on the Advanced Search Page. Using Advanced Search

Searching MODS Metadata

MODS is a metadata standard that includes information about a digital object. It stands for Metadata Object Description Schema and the standard is maintained by the Library of Congress. Every single document in GovInfo has a MODS file; they can be accessed on the Content Details pages under the Download panel on the left side of the page.

You can perform a search over any field in the MODS metadata. This applies to every collection in GovInfo, and can be especially helpful for the GPO and GOVPUB collections.

Examples:

  • A search for mods:presidentialDoc:@type:execord will result in a list of documents that have the attribute type:execord in the presidentialDoc field in the MODS and are therefore Executive Orders.
  • A search for mods:dateIngested:(2012-04-13) will result in a list of documents that have the value 2012-04-13 in the dateIngested field in the MODS and were therefore ingested into the system on April 13, 2012.
  • A search for mods:identifier:(@type:"former package identifier":"f:h100ih.txt") will result in a list of documents that have the value f:h100ih.txt for the attribute type:"former package identifier" in the identifier field in the MODS.
