GPO launches new Annual Reports collection

The U.S. Government Publishing Office (GPO) launched a new Annual Reports collection on GovInfo, making it easier to find and search for Annual Reports published by Federal agencies. Annual reports consist of reports produced by Federal agencies and other entities of the U.S. Government to document performance, financial, and program activities of the preceding year.

GPO Director Hugh Nathanial Halpern said, “By bringing these reports together in a single, searchable collection on GovInfo, GPO is making it easier to discover and access trusted Government information."

GovInfo’s Annual Reports collection provides access to more than 3,500 annual reports from hundreds of Federal agencies and Government organizations, spanning more than 165 years—from the 19th century to the present. The Annual Reports collection is a derived collection (comprised of related publications originating from other existing GovInfo collections and grouped together based on metadata). The current collection includes content from Congressionally Mandated Reports, GOVPUB, and Serial Set collections. Available Annual Reports from Congressional Committee Prints and the GPO collections will be coming in the next few weeks, while those within Congressional Documents will be added in an upcoming release.

Searching Annual Reports

GovInfo contains various Annual Reports from all three branches of the federal government from the early 19th century forward, issued by Federal agencies and organizations. This collection is not a comprehensive index of all Federal annual reports, as content availability depends on what has been published to GovInfo, identified through collection metadata, and incorporated into the Annual Reports collection. Annual Reports are available for full-text searching, and you can also use metadata fields and values to craft specific searches through either the Basic Search or Advanced Search.

  • Annual Reports are available to Browse and download by the federal agency or governmental entity that issued the report.
  • Annual Reports are available for full-text searching and you can also use metadata fields and values to craft specific searches through either the Basic Search or Advanced Search. Searchable metadata fields include: Full-Text, Branch, Category, SuDoc Class Number, Title, Originating Agency, and more. See additional fields available for searching Annual Reports.
  • See this example using Advanced Search functionality for Annual Reports documents. Select Annual Reports from the drop-down list. Under Search In, select up to five fields, including full-text, over which to search the Annual Reports collection. In this example, Originating Agency is Department of Labor, the full-text input is Wirtz; then click the Search button.
