Abstract
In January 2002 the U.S. Postal Service began delivering to Congressional offices mail irradiated to eliminate anthrax spores. In February the General Counsel of the Office of Compliance was asked to investigate employee complaints of adverse health symptoms apparently caused by contact with irradiated mail. This report concludes that handling irradiated mail for substantial periods of time may be a cause of adverse health symptoms. However, there is insufficient information at this time to reach a final conclusion on the specific cause(s) of these symptoms or whether there is a serious health risk.
