Abstract
This pamphlet presents First Lady Laura Bush's "Ready to Read, Ready to Learn Initiative," whose goals are to highlight successful early childhood programs that teach children important pre-reading and vocabulary skills; provide parents and caregivers with information to help their children learn; and help recruit and retain excellent teachers. Following a foreword by Laura Bush, the pamphlet presents an executive summary of the Ready to Read, Ready to Learn initiative; a brief summary of the initiative; a description of the White House Summit on Early Childhood Cognitive Development; a brief description of two programs that work (the Margaret H. Cone Head Start Center in Dallas, Texas, and the Reach Out and Read program); advice on assisting parents and caregivers in helping their children learn; ways to recruit, train, and retain the best and brightest teachers; and efforts at teacher training enrichment.
