The National Bureau of Standards (NBS) Circular series was comprised of compilations of information on various subjects related to NBS scientific, technical, and engineering activities. They included not only the results of NBS studies, but also data of general interest from other sources. The NBS Circulars also contained Recommended Specifications, United States Government Specifications, and United States Government Master Specifications formerly issued by NBS. Each of these bore a specification number in addition to the NBS Circular publication number. All of these specifications were canceled or superceded by Federal Specifications. The NBS Circulars series was discontinued in June 1959, and 'circular' materials were published in NBS' Journal of Research and Monograph series thereafter. The series was known as the 'Circular of Information of the National Bureau of Standards' from 1902-1903; the 'Bureau Circular of the Department of Commerce and Labor, Bureau of Standards' from 1903-1909; the 'Circular of the Bureau of Standards' from 1910-1934; the 'Circular of the National Bureau of Standards' from 1934-1948; and the 'National Bureau of Standards Circular' from 1947-1959.
