 <title>DOD Service Academies: Academic Review Processes</title>
</titleInfo>
Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO examined the academic review
processes at three Department of Defense service academies, focusing on
how these processes are used to review cases of students who have not
met academic performance standards.&lt;p/&gt;GAO found that: (1) the service academies have established similar
review processes to evaluate academically deficient students; (2)
decisions range from requiring students to repeat a failed course to
disenrollment from the academy; (3) students are considered academically
deficient if their academic point score falls below the required minimum
or they fail more courses than allowed; (4) students are not
academically disenrolled until at least one academic review group
evaluates their case; and (5) although they cannot be present for the
review, students can present written statements on their behalf during
the review process.
