 <title>School Facilities: Profiles of School Condition by State</title>
</titleInfo>
Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO reviewed the condition of
America&apos;s schools, focusing on state-specific information about school
buildings, environmental conditions, needed maintenance and costs, and
financial burdens to meet federal mandates on correcting environmental
hazards and providing access to the disabled.&lt;p/&gt;GAO found that: (1) the data obtained from its survey of 10,000 schools
was based on school officials&apos; estimates and was not independently
verified; and (2) each state includes information on the state&apos;s general
education context, the state&apos;s role in school facilities, the extent of
facility needs, and the amounts the state has spent or needs to spend to
meet federal mandates.
