 <title>U.S.-Mexico Trade: The Work Environment at Eight U.S.-Owned Maquiladora Auto Parts Plants</title>
</titleInfo>
In light of the North American Free Trade Agreement, many Members of
Congress are concerned that disparities between U.S. and Mexican labor
standards could cause job losses in the United States and undermine
workplace standards. GAO reviewed the work environment at eight
U.S.-owned maquiladora auto parts plants. This report (1) evaluates the
occupational safety and health work environment at the eight plants, (2)
describes the Mexican government&apos;s oversight of occupational safety and
health, and (3) discusses ongoing cooperation between the United States
and Mexico to enhance working conditions.
