The Defense Science Board (DSB) Task Force on Defense Against Unconventional Use of Nuclear Weapons Against the U.S. Homeland will meet in closed session on August 6-8, 2002, at the Beckman Center, Irvine, CA. The Task Force will review the Department of Defense's (DoD) responsibilities, current capabilities, and the scope of activities conducted by DoD to ensure its future preparedness to prevent, deter, detect, identify, warn, defend against, respond to, and attribute attack of the U.S. homeland by unconventional delivery of conventional and unconventional nuclear weapons, as well as radiological weapons. The mission of the DSB is to advise the Secretary of Defense and the Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology & Logistics on scientific and technical matters as they affect the perceived needs of the Department of Defense. At this meeting, the Task Force will determine the adequacy of the U.S. ability to detect, identify, respond, and prevent unconventional nuclear attacks by terrorist or sub national entities. The Task Force will also identify capabilities of the Department to provide protection against such nuclear attacks in support of national capabilities in homeland defense. In accordance with section 10(d) of the Federal Advisory Committee Act, Public Law No. 92-463, as amended (5 U.S.C. app. II), it has been determined that this DSB Task Force meeting concerns matters listed in 5 U.S.C. 552b(c)(1) and that, accordingly, the meeting will be close to the public.
