aid to supplement State and local recovery efforts in the area struck by
severe storms and flooding beginning June 26 and continuing.
July 2
In the afternoon, the President and Mrs. Bush returned to Washington,
DC.
The President declared a major disaster in Maryland and ordered Federal
aid to supplement State and local recovery efforts in the area struck by
severe storms, flooding, and tornadoes beginning on June 22 and
continuing.
The President declared a major disaster in Ohio and ordered Federal aid
to supplement State and local recovery efforts in the area struck by
severe storms, tornadoes, straight line winds, and flooding from June
21-23.
July 3
In the morning, the President had an intelligence briefing. Later, he
met with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. Then, in the Roosevelt Room, he participated in a
bill signing ceremony for H.R. 5403, the Safe and Timely Interstate
Placement of Foster Children Act of 2006.
The President announced his intention to appoint Kirk Van Tine as a member of the Presidential Emergency Board No. 239
and, upon appointment, to designate him as Chair.
The President announced his intention to appoint Roger P. Nober and Robert E. Peterson as members of the Presidential Emergency Board No. 239.
July 4
In the morning, the President had an intelligence briefing. Later, he
traveled to Fort Bragg, NC, where, upon arrival, he met with USA Freedom
Corps volunteer Benny Smith, Jr. He then
toured U.S. Army Special Operations Command.
Later in the morning, at the 3d Brigade, 82d Airborne Division Dining
Facility, the President had lunch with military personnel and their
families.
In the afternoon, the President returned to Washington, DC. While en
route aboard Air Force One, he participated in an interview with Stars
and Stripes newspaper.
During the day, the President met with Secretary of Defense Donald H.
Rumsfeld and Secretary of State
Condoleezza Rice to discuss the situation
in North Korea.
In the evening, in the Residence, the President attended a dinner party
to celebrate the Fourth of July and his birthday.
July 5
In the morning, the President had an intelligence briefing and met with
the National Security Council. Later, he met with members of the
Commission for Assistance to a Free Cuba, who presented him with their
official report. He then traveled to Alexandria, VA.
Later in the morning, the President returned to Washington, DC.
In the afternoon, the President had lunch with Vice President Dick
Cheney.
The President announced that he has appointed Helgi C. Walker as a member of the District of Columbia Judicial
Nomination Commission.

President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia.

In the afternoon, the President traveled to Aurora, IL, where he toured
Cabot Microelectronics Corp. Later, he returned to Washington, DC.

congressional leaders. Later, he had an intelligence briefing. Then, in
the Oval Office, he and Mrs. Bush met with President Alejandro
Toledo of Peru and his wife, Eliane Karp de
Toledo.
Later in the morning, in the Oval Office, the President had a telephone
conversation with crewmembers of the Space Shuttle Discovery. He then
participated in a photo opportunity with members of the National Council
on the Arts.
In the afternoon, the President traveled to Port Washington, WI. Later,
he traveled to Milwaukee, WI.
In the evening, the President returned to Washington, DC.
The President announced his intention to nominate Cindy Lou
Courville to be U.S. Representative to
the African Union with the rank of Ambassador.
The President announced his intention to nominate Philip S.
Goldberg to be Ambassador to Bolivia.
The President announced his intention to nominate Henry M. Paulson,
Jr., to be U.S. Governor of the
following organizations: the International Monetary Fund; the

at the Town Hall, they participated in a guestbook signing ceremony and
a greeting with local community representatives.
In the afternoon, in the Achtmannskammer Room of the Town Hall, the
President had a working lunch with Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany. Later, he and Mrs. Bush toured St. Nikolai
Church.
In the evening, the President and Mrs. Bush traveled to
Trinwillershagen, Germany, where, at the Zu den Linden restaurant, they
attended a social dinner and entertainment hosted by Chancellor
Merkel. They then returned to Heiligendamm,
Germany.
The White House announced that the President will host Prime Minister
Nuri al-Maliki of Iraq at the White House on
July 25.
The President announced his intention to nominate Richard W.

July 14
In the morning, the President had an intelligence briefing. Later, he
and Mrs. Bush traveled to St. Petersburg, Russia. While en route aboard
Air Force One, he had separate telephone conversations with King
Abdullah II of Jordan, President Mohamed
Hosni Mubarak of Egypt, and Prime
Minister Fuad Siniora of Lebanon to discuss the
situation in the Middle East.
Later in the morning, upon arrival in St. Petersburg, the President and
Mrs. Bush participated in a wreath-laying ceremony at the Monument to
the Heroic Defenders of Leningrad.
In the afternoon, the President and Mrs. Bush traveled to Strelna,
Russia.
In the evening, in the Italian Guest Room at Konstantinovsky Palace, the

Hadley to discuss the situation in the

July 31
In the morning, the President had an intelligence briefing. Later, at
the Versailles Restaurant and Bakery, he participated in an interview
with Radio Mambi. He then visited the National Hurricane Center.
Later in the morning, at the U.S. Coast Guard Integrated Support
Command, the President participated in an interview with Michael
Putney of WPLG-TV Miami.
In the afternoon, at the U.S. Coast Guard Integrated Support Command,
the President participated in separate interviews with Pedro
Sevcec of Telemundo and Neil Cavuto of FOX News. Later, he traveled to Coral Gables, FL,
