Nomination of Richard Goodwin Capen, Jr., To Be United States Ambassador 
to Spain

April 23, 1992
    The President today announced his intention to nominate Richard 
Goodwin Capen, Jr., of Florida, to be Ambassador to Spain. He would 
succeed Joseph Zappala.
    Currently Mr. Capen serves as a consultant for Knight-Ridder, Inc. 
Prior to this, he served as vice chairman and director for Knight-
Ridder, Inc., in Miami, FL, 1989-91; as director of Knight-Ridder, Inc., 
1987-91; and as chairman and publisher of the Miami Herald, 1983-89. 
From 1979 to 1982, Mr. Capen served as senior vice president for 
operations of Knight-Ridder, Inc.
    Mr. Capen graduated from Columbia College (B.A., 1956). He was born 
July 16, 1934, in Hartford, CT. Mr. Capen served in the U.S. Navy, 1956-
59. He is married, has three children, and resides in Miami, FL.
