<section id="d49195e102" identifier="/us/pl/118/150/s1" style="-uslm-lc:I658146"><num class="bold" value="1">SECTION 1. </num><heading>SHORT TITLE.</heading><content style="-uslm-lc:I658120">  This Act may be cited as the “<shortTitle role="act">Shirley Chisholm Congressional Gold Medal Act</shortTitle>”.</content></section>
<section id="d49195e112" identifier="/us/pl/118/150/s2" style="-uslm-lc:I658141"><num class="fontsize12" value="2">SEC. 2. </num><heading>FINDINGS.</heading><chapeau class="indentUp0 firstIndent0 fontsize10" id="x219ccb96-e810-11f0-bc57-ad3ac4b1618c" style="-uslm-lc:I658120">  The Congress finds the following:</chapeau><paragraph class="fontsize10" id="y219ccb97-e810-11f0-bc57-ad3ac4b1618c" identifier="/us/pl/118/150/s2/1" style="-uslm-lc:I658122"><num class="fontsize10" style="-uslm-lc:emspace2" value="1">(1) </num><content>In 1968, Shirley Chisholm became the first African-American woman elected to Congress where she served until 1982.</content></paragraph>
<paragraph class="fontsize10" id="y219ccb98-e810-11f0-bc57-ad3ac4b1618c" identifier="/us/pl/118/150/s2/2" style="-uslm-lc:I658122"><num class="fontsize10" style="-uslm-lc:emspace2" value="2">(2) </num><content>Shirley Chisholm inspired and led the march of political achievement by African Americans and women in the 3 decades since she ran for the Presidency of the United States.</content></paragraph>
<paragraph class="fontsize10" id="y219ccb99-e810-11f0-bc57-ad3ac4b1618c" identifier="/us/pl/118/150/s2/3" style="-uslm-lc:I658122"><num class="fontsize10" style="-uslm-lc:emspace2" value="3">(3) </num><content>Her election to Congress and her candidacy for the Presidency raised the profile and aspirations of all African Americans and women in the field of politics.</content></paragraph>
<paragraph class="fontsize10" id="y219ccb9a-e810-11f0-bc57-ad3ac4b1618c" identifier="/us/pl/118/150/s2/4" style="-uslm-lc:I658122"><num class="fontsize10" style="-uslm-lc:emspace2" value="4">(4) </num><content>Shirley Chisholm was recognized for her activism, independence, and groundbreaking achievements in politics during and after the civil rights era.</content></paragraph>
<paragraph class="fontsize10" id="y219ccb9b-e810-11f0-bc57-ad3ac4b1618c" identifier="/us/pl/118/150/s2/5" style="-uslm-lc:I658122"><num class="fontsize10" style="-uslm-lc:emspace2" value="5">(5) </num><content>Shirley Chisholm was born in Brooklyn, New York, on November 30, 1924, attended Brooklyn College, and earned a master’s degree from Columbia University.</content></paragraph>
<paragraph class="fontsize10" id="y219ccb9c-e810-11f0-bc57-ad3ac4b1618c" identifier="/us/pl/118/150/s2/6" style="-uslm-lc:I658122"><num class="fontsize10" style="-uslm-lc:emspace2" value="6">(6) </num><content>Shirley Chisholm worked in education and social services before being elected to the New York State Assembly in 1964.</content></paragraph>
<paragraph class="fontsize10" id="y219ccb9d-e810-11f0-bc57-ad3ac4b1618c" identifier="/us/pl/118/150/s2/7" style="-uslm-lc:I658122"><num class="fontsize10" style="-uslm-lc:emspace2" value="7">(7) </num><content>Shirley Chisholm established the Unity Democratic Club in 1960, which played a significant role in rallying Black and Hispanic voters in New York City.</content></paragraph>
<paragraph class="fontsize10" id="y219ccb9e-e810-11f0-bc57-ad3ac4b1618c" identifier="/us/pl/118/150/s2/8" style="-uslm-lc:I658122"><num class="fontsize10" style="-uslm-lc:emspace2" value="8">(8) </num><content>In 1969, Shirley Chisholm began her service in the 91st Congress, representing New York’s 12th Congressional District in the House of Representatives.</content></paragraph>
<paragraph class="fontsize10" id="y219ccb9f-e810-11f0-bc57-ad3ac4b1618c" identifier="/us/pl/118/150/s2/9" style="-uslm-lc:I658122"><num class="fontsize10" style="-uslm-lc:emspace2" value="9">(9) </num><content>During her service in the House of Representatives, Shirley Chisholm promoted the employment of women in Congress and was vocal in her support of civil rights, women’s rights, and the poor, while fervently opposing the Vietnam War.</content></paragraph>
<paragraph class="fontsize10" id="y219ccba0-e810-11f0-bc57-ad3ac4b1618c" identifier="/us/pl/118/150/s2/10" style="-uslm-lc:I658122"><num class="fontsize10" style="-uslm-lc:emspace2" value="10">(10) </num><content>In 1972, Shirley Chisholm was the first African American to seek the nomination of a major party for President of the United States.<page identifier="/us/stat/138/1683">138 STAT. 1683</page></content></paragraph>
<paragraph class="fontsize10" id="y219ccba1-e810-11f0-bc57-ad3ac4b1618c" identifier="/us/pl/118/150/s2/11" style="-uslm-lc:I658122"><num class="fontsize10" style="-uslm-lc:emspace2" value="11">(11) </num><content>A historic figure in American political history, Shirley Chisholm died at the age of 80 in Ormond Beach, Florida, on New Year’s Day 2005.</content></paragraph>

<section id="d49195e179" identifier="/us/pl/118/150/s3" style="-uslm-lc:I658141"><num class="fontsize12" value="3">SEC. 3. </num><heading>CONGRESSIONAL GOLD MEDAL.</heading><subsection class="firstIndent0 fontsize10" id="y219d19c2-e810-11f0-bc57-ad3ac4b1618c" identifier="/us/pl/118/150/s3/a" style="-uslm-lc:I658120"><num class="fontsize10" style="-uslm-lc:emspace2" value="a">(a) </num><heading class="fontsize10"><inline class="smallCaps">Presentation Authorized</inline>.—</heading><content>The Speaker of the House of Representatives and the President pro tempore of the Senate shall make appropriate arrangements for the posthumous presentation, on behalf of the Congress, of a gold medal of appropriate design in commemoration of Shirley Chisholm.</content></subsection>
<subsection class="firstIndent0 fontsize10" id="y219d19c3-e810-11f0-bc57-ad3ac4b1618c" identifier="/us/pl/118/150/s3/b" style="-uslm-lc:I658120"><num class="fontsize10" style="-uslm-lc:emspace2" value="b">(b) </num><heading class="fontsize10"><inline class="smallCaps">Design and Striking</inline>.—</heading><content>For purposes of the presentation referred to in subsection (a), the Secretary of the Treasury (referred to in this Act as the “Secretary”) shall strike a gold medal with suitable emblems, devices, and inscriptions, to be determined by the Secretary. The design shall bear an image of, and an inscription of the name of, Shirley Chisholm.</content></subsection>
<subsection class="firstIndent0 fontsize10" id="y219d19c4-e810-11f0-bc57-ad3ac4b1618c" identifier="/us/pl/118/150/s3/c" style="-uslm-lc:I658120"><num class="fontsize10" style="-uslm-lc:emspace2" value="c">(c) </num><heading class="fontsize10"><inline class="smallCaps">Smithsonian Institution</inline>.—</heading><paragraph class="fontsize10" id="y219d19c5-e810-11f0-bc57-ad3ac4b1618c" identifier="/us/pl/118/150/s3/c/1" style="-uslm-lc:I658122"><num class="fontsize10" style="-uslm-lc:emspace2" value="1">(1) </num><heading class="fontsize10"><inline class="smallCaps">In general</inline>.—</heading><content>After the award of the gold medal referred to in subsection (a), the gold medal shall be given to the Smithsonian Institution, where it will be displayed as appropriate and made available for research.</content></paragraph>
<paragraph class="fontsize10" id="y219d19c6-e810-11f0-bc57-ad3ac4b1618c" identifier="/us/pl/118/150/s3/c/2" style="-uslm-lc:I658122"><num class="fontsize10" style="-uslm-lc:emspace2" value="2">(2) </num><heading class="fontsize10"><inline class="smallCaps">Sense of congress</inline>.—</heading><content>It is the sense of Congress that the Smithsonian Institution should make the gold medal received under paragraph (1) for display elsewhere, particularly at other locations and events associated with Shirley Chisholm.</content></paragraph>

<section id="d49195e229" identifier="/us/pl/118/150/s4" style="-uslm-lc:I658141"><num class="fontsize12" value="4">SEC. 4. </num><heading>DUPLICATE MEDALS.</heading><content style="-uslm-lc:I658120">  The Secretary may strike and sell duplicates in bronze of the gold medal struck pursuant to section 3, at a price sufficient to cover the costs of the medals, including labor, materials, dies, use of machinery, and overhead expenses.</content></section>
<section id="d49195e236" identifier="/us/pl/118/150/s5" style="-uslm-lc:I658141"><num class="fontsize12" value="5">SEC. 5. </num><heading>STATUS OF MEDALS.</heading><subsection class="firstIndent0 fontsize10" id="y219d19c7-e810-11f0-bc57-ad3ac4b1618c" identifier="/us/pl/118/150/s5/a" style="-uslm-lc:I658120"><num class="fontsize10" style="-uslm-lc:emspace2" value="a">(a) </num><heading class="fontsize10"><inline class="smallCaps">National Medals</inline>.—</heading><content>Medals struck under this Act are national medals for purposes of <ref href="/us/usc/t31/ch51">chapter 51 of title 31, United States Code</ref>.</content></subsection>
<subsection class="firstIndent0 fontsize10" id="y219d19c8-e810-11f0-bc57-ad3ac4b1618c" identifier="/us/pl/118/150/s5/b" style="-uslm-lc:I658120"><num class="fontsize10" style="-uslm-lc:emspace2" value="b">(b) </num><heading class="fontsize10"><inline class="smallCaps">Numismatic Items</inline>.—</heading><content>For purposes of sections 5134 and 5136 of <ref href="/us/usc/t31">title 31, United States Code</ref>, all medals struck under this Act shall be considered to be numismatic items.</content></subsection>

<section id="d49195e267" identifier="/us/pl/118/150/s6" style="-uslm-lc:I658141"><num class="fontsize12" value="6">SEC. 6. </num><heading>AUTHORITY TO USE FUND AMOUNTS; PROCEEDS OF SALE.</heading><subsection class="firstIndent0 fontsize10" id="y219d40d9-e810-11f0-bc57-ad3ac4b1618c" identifier="/us/pl/118/150/s6/a" style="-uslm-lc:I658120"><num class="fontsize10" style="-uslm-lc:emspace2" value="a">(a) </num><heading class="fontsize10"><inline class="smallCaps">Authority To Use Fund Amounts</inline>.—</heading><content>There is authorized to be charged against the United States Mint Public Enterprise Fund such amounts as may be necessary to pay for the costs of the medals struck under this Act.<page identifier="/us/stat/138/1684">138 STAT. 1684</page></content></subsection>
<subsection class="firstIndent0 fontsize10" id="y219d40da-e810-11f0-bc57-ad3ac4b1618c" identifier="/us/pl/118/150/s6/b" style="-uslm-lc:I658120"><num class="fontsize10" style="-uslm-lc:emspace2" value="b">(b) </num><heading class="fontsize10"><inline class="smallCaps">Proceeds of Sale</inline>.—</heading><content>Amounts received from the sale of duplicate bronze medals authorized under section 4 shall be deposited into the United States Mint Public Enterprise Fund.</content></subsection>
