1 Allowances in this'eolumn are on the basis of a month of 30 days. For a month of a greater or lesser number of days the amounts should be correspondingly
increased or decreased.
3 Allowances fixed by the President: Suitable quarters in kind or in lieu thereof commutation of quarters at rate of $6,500 per annum; necessary fuel and light for quarters in kind, or in lieu thereof commutation of fuel and light at rate of $1,500 per annum. Order of the Secretary of War by direction of the President, 16 November 1920.
3 Officers serving in the grade of General of the Army (5 Star) shall, while on active duty, receive the same pay and allowances as a major general, plus a personal money allowance of $5,000 per annum. (See sec. 4, act 14 Dec. 1944 (58 Stat. 802).)
The provisions above shall be effective only until six months after the termination of the wars in which the United States is now engaged as proclaimed by the President, or such earlier date as the Congress, by concurrent resolution, may fix. (See sec. 8, act 14 Dec. 1944 (58 Stat. 802).)
< Entitled to rank and title of general; pay and allowances of a major general and to a personal money allowance of $2,200 per year, (see sec. 7, act 16 June 1942 (56 Stat. 359)) unless an officer holding office as Chief of Staff is serving as General of the Army (5 Star). (See note 3.)
* Officers serving in the grade of lieutenant general shall be entitled, while so serving, to pay and allowances of a major general and to a personalmoney allowance of $500 per year. (See sec. 7, act 16 June 1942 (56 Stat. 359) J
NOTES
1.	LONGEVITY. Every officer paid under the provisions of this section shall receive an increase of 5 per centum of the base pay of his period for each three years of service up to thirty years. (See sec. 1, act 16 June 1942 (56 Stat. 359).)
2.	FOREIGN SERVICE OR SEA DUTY PAY. The base pay of any commissioned officer shall be increased by 10 ger centum for any period of service while on sea duty or duty in any place beyond the continental limits of the United tates or in Alaska. The per centum increases herein authorized shall be included in computing increases in pay for aviation and submarine duty. This section shall be effective from 7 December 1941, and shall cease to be in effect twelve months after the termination of the present war is proclaimed by the President. (See sec. 2, act 16 June 1942 (56 Stat. 359).)
3.	FLYING PAY. Officers shall receive an increase of 50 per centum of their pay when by orders of competent authority they are required to participate regularly and frequently in aerial flights, and when in consequence of such orders they do participate in regular and frequent flights. (See sec. 18, act 16 June 1942 (56 Stat. 359).)

4. GLIDER PAY. Any officer, not in flying-pay or parachute-jumping-pay status, who is required by orders of competent authority to participate in regular and frequent glider flights as an essential part of his military duty and training, shall receive an increase of 50 per centum of his pay when in consequence of such orders he participates in such flights, provided that such increase shall not exceed $100 per month. (See sec. 18, act 16 June 1942 as amended act 1 July 1944.)
5. PARACHUTISTS PAY. Any officer, not in flying-pay status, for whom parachute jumping is an essential part of his military duty and who has received a rating as a parachutist or is undergoing training for such a ratine shall receive, while engaged upon parachute duty, additional pay of the rate of $100 per month. (See sec. 18 act 16 June 1942 (56 Stat. 359), as amended act 7 September 1944.)
6. DIVING PAY. Officers assigned to duty as divers in actual or repair operations in depths of over 90 feet, or in less than 90 feet when the officer in charge of operations finds that extraordinary hazardous conditions exist, shall receive additional pay at the rate of $5 for each hour or fraction thereof so employed. (See act 10 April 1943 (57 Stat 62).)
, • AIDES. Additional pay is authorized for aides to a major general, not more than three in number, who shall be in the grade of captain or lieutenant. (R. S. 1098.)
Additional pay is authorized for aides to a brigadier general, not more than two in number, who shall be in the grade of lieutenant. (R. S. 1098.)
An aide to a major general is allowed $200 and an aide to a brigadier general $150 per year in addition to the pay of his rank. (R. S. 1261.)
Pay for aides to officers holding a permanent rank of brigadier general or major general but who are temporarily holding higher rank (such as lieutenant general) is authorized as shown in preceding paragraphs. See 22 Comp. Gen. 335.
The aides to a lieutenant general of a higher rank than those authorized by R. S. 1098 may not be paid.
8. SAVING CLAUSE. No person, active or retired, shall suffer any reduction in any pay, allowances, or compensation to which he was entitled upon the effective date of this act. (See sec. 19, act 16 June 1942 (56 Stat. 359).)

NOTES
1.	No increase for longevity for periods not on active duty after retirement unless retired for wounds received in battle. (See act 2 March 1903 (32 Stat. 932).)
2.	Any person originally appointed under the provisions of this act at an age greater than 45 years shall, when retired, receive retired pay at the rate of 4 per centum of active pay for each complete year of commissioned service in the United States Army, the total to be not more than 75 per centum: Provided, That any officer so appointed, who has been or may hereafter be retired in accordance with law on account of physical disability incident to the service, shall receive, from the date of such retirement, retired pay at the rate of 75 per centum of his active pay at the time of such retirement. (See sec. 24, act 3 June 1916 (39 Stat. 182), as amended by sec. 24, act 4 June 1920 (41 Stat. 771), act 19 May 1926 (44 Stat. 564).)
In the computation of the retired pay of officers heretofore or hereafter retired with pay at the rate of 2%, 3, or 4 per centum of the active duty pay received by them at the time of retirement multiplied by the number of years of service for which entitled to credit in the computation of their pay on the active list, not to exceed a total of 75 per centum of said active duty pay, active duty performed by such retired officers subsequent to the date of their retirement shall be counted for the purpose of computing percentage rates and increases with respect to their retired pay. The increases shall be at the rate of 2J^, 3, or 4 percentum for each year of active duty and a fractional year of six months or more shall be considered a full year in computing the number of years: Provided, That the increased retired pay of such retired officers shall in no case exceed 75 per centum of the active duty pay as authorized by existing law. (See sec. 15, act 16 June 1942 (56 Stat. 359).)
Retired officers are entitled to credit for active duty performed since retirement in computing the longevity increments and pay periods of their retired pay. The resulting increases in retired pay accrue only from 26 May 1928. (See act 26 May 1928 (45 Stat. 774).)

3.	The retired pay of any officer heretofore retired under the provisions of section 24b, National Defense Act, 3 June 1916, as amended, who served in any capacity as a member of the military or naval forces of the United States prior to 12 November 1918, shall be 75 per centum of his active-duty pay: Provided, That no back pay, allowances, or other emoluments shall be held to accrue for any period prior to 1 June 1942, as a result of the enactment of this paragraph.
The retired pay of any officer who served in any capacity as a member of the military or naval forces of the United States prior to 12 November 1918, hereafter retired under any provision of law, shall, unless such officer is entitled to retired pay of a higher grade, be 75 per centum of his active duty pay at the time of his retirement. (See sec. 15, act 16 June 1942 (56 Stat. 359).)
4.	That hereafter the retired pay of officers who were retired on or before 30 June 1922, shall not be less than that provided for the officers of equal rank and length of service retired subsequent to that date: Provided, That nothing in this act shall operate to reduce the pay of any officer now on the retired list. (See act 8 May 1926 (44 Stat 417) See also sec. 15, act 16 June 1942 (56 Stat. 359).)	7
5.	Retired officers shall, when on active duty, receive full pay and allowances of the grade or rank in which they serve on such active duty, and when on active duty status, shall have the same pay and allowance rights while on leave of absence or sick as officers on the active list, and, if death occurs when on active duty status, while on leave of absence or sick, their dependents shall not thereby be deprived of the benefits provided in the Act approved 17 December 1919, as amended. (See sec. 15, act 16 June 1942 (56 Stat. 359).)

NOTE
Any person inducted into the land or naval forces of the United States for active training and service, under section 3 (b) of the Selective Training and Service Act of 1940 shall, in addition to the amounts otherwise payable to such person with respect to such training and service, be entitled to receive the sum of $10 for each month of such training and service in excess of twelve. The provisions of this section shall also apply (1) to any enlisted personnel of the National Guard of the United States or of any other reserve component of the Army of the United States ordered into the active military service under the authority of Public Resolution Numbered 96, approved 27 August 1940, or section 37a of the National Defense Act of 1916, as amended for any such service so rendered by any such personnel in excess of twelve months and (2) to any enlisted personnel of the Regular Army for each month of military service rendered by him after the date of enactment of this joint resolution, and after his total military service (rendered before or after such date) exceeds twelve months.
The provisions of this section shall be applicable only during the period of the unlimited emergency declared bv the President on 27 May 1941. (Sec. 8 (a) and (b), act 18 August 1941 (55 Stat. 627).)

1 Allowances in this column are on the basis of a month of 30 days. For a month of a greater or less number of days the amounts should be correspondingly increased or decreased.

4 Officers serving in the grade of lieutenant general shall be entitled, while so serving, to pay and allowances of a major general and to a personal money allowance of $500 per year. (See sec. 7, act 16 June 1942 (56 Stat. 359).)
NOTES
1.	LONGEVITY. Every officer paid under the provisions of this section shall receive an increase of 5 percentum of the base pay of his period for each three years of service up to thirty years. (See sec. 1, act 16 June 1942 (56 Stat. 359).)
2.	FOREIGN SERVICE OR SEA DUTY PAY. The base pay of any commissioned officer shall be increased by 10 percentum for any period of service while on sea duty or duty in any place beyond the continental limits of the United States or in Alaska. The percentum increases herein authorized shall be included in computing increases in pay for aviation and submarine duty. This section shall be effective from 7 December 1941, and shall cease to be in effect twelve months after the termination of the present war is proclaimed by the President. (See sec. 2, act 16 June 1942 (56 Stat. 359).)
3.	FLYING PAY. Officers shall receive an increase of 50 percentum of their pay when by orders of competent authority they are required to participate regularly and frequently in aerial flights, and when in consequence of such orders they do participate in regular and frequent flights. (See sec. 18, act 16 June 1942 (56 Stat. 359).)
4.	GLIDER PAY. Any officer, not in flying-pay or parachute-jumping-pay status, who is required by orders of competent authority to participate in regular and frequent glider flights as an essential part of his military duty and training, shall receive an increase of 50 percentum of his pay when in consequence of such orders he participates in such flights, provided that such increase shall not exceed $100 per month. (See sec. 18, act 16 June 1942, as amended, act 1 July 1944.)

5.	PARACHUTISTS’ PAY. Any officer, not in flying-pay status, for whom parachute jumping is an essential part of his military duty and who has received a rating as a parachutist or is undergoing training for such a rating shall receive, while engaged upon parachute duty, additional pay of the rate of $100 per month. (See sec. 18, act 16 June 1942 (56 Stat. 359), as amended act 7 September 1944.)
6.	DIVING PAY. Officers assigned to duty as divers in actual or repair operations in depths of over 90 feet, or in less than 90 feet when the officer in charge of operations finds that extraordinary hazardous conditions exist, shall receive additional pay at the rate of $5 for each hour or fraction thereof so employed. (See act 10 April 1943 (57 Stat. 62).)
7.	AIDES. Additional pay is authorized for aides to a major general, not more than three in number, who shall be in the grade of captain or lieutenant. (R. S. 1098.)
Additional pay is authorized for aides to a brigadier general, not more than two in number, who shall be in the grade of lieutenant. (R. S. 1098.)
An aide to a major general is allowed $200 and an aide to a brigadier general $150 per year in addition to the pav of his rank. (R. S. 1261.)
Pay for aides to officers holding a permanent rank of brigadier general or major general but who are temporarily holding higher rank (such as lieutenant general) is authorized as shown in preceding paragraphs. See 22 Comp. Gen. 335.
The aides to a lieutenant general of a higher rank than those authorized by R. S. 1098 may not be paid.
8.	SAVING CLAUSE. No person, active or retired, shall suffer any reduction in any pay, allowances, or compensation to which he was entitled upon the effective date of this act. (See sec. 19, act 16 June 1942 (56 Stat. 359).)

Any person originally appointed under the provisions of this act at an age greater than 45 years shall, when retired, receive retired pay at the rate of 4 percentum of active pay for each complete year of commissioned service in the United States Army, the total to be not more than 75 percentum: Provided, That any officer so appointed, who has been or may hereafter be retired in accordance with law on account of physical disability incident to the service, shall receive, from the date of such retirement, retired pay at the rate of 75 percentum of his active pay at the time of such retirement. (See sec. 24, act 3 June 1916 (39 Stat. 182), as amended by sec. 24, act 4 June 1920 (41 Stat. 771), act 19 May 1926 (44 Stat. 564).)
In the computation of the retired pay of officers heretofore or hereafter retired with pay at the rate of 2^, 3, or 4 percentum of the active duty pay received by them at the time of retirement multiplied by the number of years of service for which entitled to credit in the computation of their pay on the active list, not to exceed a total of 75 percentum of said active duty pay, active duty performed by such retired officers subsequent to the date of their retirement shall be counted for the purpose of computing percentage rates and increases with respect to their retired pay. lhe increases shall be at the rate of 2%, 3, or 4 percentum for each year of active duty and a fractional year of six months or more shall be considered a full year in computing the number of years: Provided, That the increased retired pay of such retired officers shall in no case exceed 75 percentum of the active duty pay as authorized by existing law. (See sec. 15, act 16 June 1942 (56 Stat. 359).)
Retired officers are entitled to credit for active duty performed since retirement in computing the longevity increments and pay periods of their retired pay. The resulting increases in retired pay accrue only from 26 May 1928. (See act 26 May 1928 (45 Stat. 774).)

3.	The retired pay of any officer heretofore retired under the provisions of section 24b, National Defense Act, 3 June 1916, as amended, who served in any capacity as a member of the military or naval forces of the United States prior to 12 November 1918, shall be 75 percentum of his active-duty pay: Provided, That no back pay, allowances, or other emoluments shall be held to accrue for any period prior to 1 June 1942, as a result of the enactment of this paragraph.
The retired pay of any officer who served in any capacity as a member of the military or naval forces of the United States prior to 12 November 1918, hereafter retired under any provision of law, shall, unless such officer is entitled to retired pay of a higher grade, be 75 percentum of his active duty pay at the time of his retirement. (See sec. 15, act 16 June 1942 (56 Stat. 359).)
4.	That hereafter the retired pay of officers who were retired on or before 30 June 1922, shall not be less than that provided for the officers of equal rank and length of service retired subsequent to that date: Provided, That nothing in this act shall operate to reduce the pay of any officer now on the retired list. (See act 8 May 1926 (44 Stat. 417). See also sec. 15, act 16 June 1942 (56 Stat. 359).)
5.	Retired officers shall, when on active duty, receive full pay and allowances of the grade or rank in which they serve on such active duty, and when on active duty status, shall have the same pay and allowance rights while on leave of absence or sick as officers on the active list, and, if death occurs when on active duty status, while on leave of absence or sick, their dependents shall not thereby be deprived of the benefits provided in the Act approved 17 December 1919, as amended. (See sec. 15, act 16 June 1942 (56 Stat. 359).)

3. FLYING PAY. Members of the Reserve forces and the National Guard shall receive an increase of 50 percentum of their pay when by orders of competent authority they are required to participate regularly and frequently in aerial flights, and when in consequence of such orders they do participate in regular and frequent flights: Provided, That when personnel of the National Guard are entitled to armory-drill pay, the increase of 50 percentum thereof herein provided shall be based on the entire amount of such armory-drill pay to which they shall be entitled for a calendar month or fractional part thereof, and the required aerial flights may be made at ordered drills of an air-service organization, or at other times when so authorized by the President. 4.	GLIDER PAY. Any warrant officer, not in flying-pay or parachute-jumping-pay status, who is required by orders of competent authority to participate in regular and frequent glider flights as an essential part of his military duty and training, shall receive an increase of 50 per centum of his pay when in consequence of such orders he participates in such flights, provided that such increase shall not exceed $100 per month. (See sec. 18, act 16 June 1942, as amended, act 1 July 1944.)
5.	PARACHUTISTS’ PAY. Any warrant officer, not in flying-pay status, for whom parachute jumping is an essential part of his military duty and who has received a rating as a parachutist or is undergoing training for such a rating shall receive, while engaged upon parachute duty, additional pay of the rate of $100 per month. (See sec. 18, act 16 June 1942 (56 Stat. 359), as amended, act 7 September 1944.)
6.	SOLDIERS’ HOME DEDUCTIONS. Deductions for the maintenance of the United States Soldiers’ Home will be made from the pay of warrant officers of the Regular Army. (See AR 35-2220.)

4.	MEMBERS OF ARMY NURSE CORPS—SERVICE TO BE COUNTED. In computing service of members of the Army Nurse Corps there shall be credited active service in the Army Nurse Corps and in the Navy Nurse Corps, active service as contract nurse prior to 2 February 1901, and service as a reserve nurse on active duty since 2 February 1901. (See sec. 3, act 22 Dec. 1942 (56 Stat, 1072).)
5.	FEMALE DIETETIC AND PHYSICAL THERAPY PERSONNEL—ACTIVE SERVICE. All active full-time service (except as student or apprentice) in the dietetic or physical therapy categories rendered subsequent to 6 April 1917, as a civilian employee of the War Department, shall be included in computing service of female dietetic and physical therapy personnel. 6	PAY AND ALLOWANCES OF TECHNICAL AND PROFESSIONAL FEMALE PERSONNEL. The President is authorized to provide for the appointment in the Medical Department of the Army of technical and professional, female personnel in categories required for duty outside the continental United States, who shall be distributed, in accordance with regulations prescribed by the Secretary of War, in relative ranks and grades corresponding to the commissioned grades of the Regular Army, and shall receive the pay and allowances for subsistence and rental of quarters, as now or hereafter provided by law for military personnel of comparable grade, without dependents. (See sec. 6, act 22 Dec. 1942 (56 Stat. 1072).)
7.	RETIRED PAY, ARMY NURSE CORPS. The annual pay of a retired member of the Army Nurse Corps, retired for other than physical disability, shall be 3 per centum of the total annual active duty pay which she is receiving at the time of retirement, multiplied by the number of complete years of service rendered prior to retirement, but not exceeding 75 percentum of such annual active-duty pay: Provided, That in computing the period of service for retired pay a fractional year of 6 months or more shall be considered a full year: Provided further, That for the purpose of computing eligibility for retirement and retired pay, there shall be credited active service in the Army Nurse Corps, active service as contract nurse prior to 2 February 1901, and service as a Reserve nurse on active duty since 2 February 1901.
