These instructions are published for the information and guidance of the personnel to whom this equipment is assigned. They contain information on the operation and maintenance of the equipment, together with illustrations identifying the component parts of the equipment. They apply only to lamp, therapeutic, mercury arc, air-cooled, mobile, complete, 110-volt, 60-cycle, Medical Department Item No. 7126005, and are arranged in three chapters: Chapter 1. Introduction; Chapter 2, Operating Instructions; Chapter 3, Maintenance Instructions. b. All service parts are listed in the appendix. 2. RECORDS. There are no forms or records which are required to be kept in conjunction with equipment. Section II. DESCRIPTION AND DATA 3. DESCRIPTION. Lamp, therapeutic, mercury arc, air-cooled, mobile, is an ultraviolet ray generator for irradiating areas of the body. The ultraviolet rays are produced by a self-starting, alternating-current, hot cathode lamp made of quartz containing a minute quantity of mercury in vacuum. The lamp is so constructed that the distance and direction from the ultraviolet ray source to the surface to be irradiated is adjustable. 4. DATA. a. Electrical characteristics. (1) Voltage—100 to 125 volts. (2) Frequency—60 cycles. (3) Line current, (a) Burdick Model No. QA-45O-NH and General Electric No. P2013 Model F—approximately 6 amperes. (b) Hanovia Model No. S-2307-A—approximately 18 amperes. (4) Line wiring specifications—No. 14 conductors for power service up to 100 feet. (5) Fuse size required on electric current supply line—30 amperes, b. Radiation intensity. I his chapter contains information for the guidance of the personnel responsible for the operation of this equipment. Section II. SERVICE UPON RECEIPT OF EQUIPMENT 6. NEW EQUIPMENT, a. Unpacking. (1) Open shipping boxes carefully. (2) Remove packing materials. (o) Lift assemblies and parts from the boxes and unwrap. b. Assemblies. 1 he lamp is issued broken down into the following assemblies: (1) Base upright assembly. (2) Burner housing assembly. (3) Burner assembly. c. Assembling the Burdick model. (1) Screw the casters into the sockets on the bottom of the cast iron base. 7R03608 (fig. 2), and set on the floor. (2) Remove the two wing nuts from the screws on the bottom of the base housing, 7R03612 (fig. 2). (3) I lace the base housing on the cast iron base in such a manner as to allow the two screws from which the wing nuts were removed to go through the two holes provided for this purpose in the cast iron base. (4) Replace the two wing nuts on the screws from which they were removed on the bottom side of the cast iron base. Draw the wing nuts up tight. (7) Tighten the setscrew on under side of the cast iron base against the lower end of the upright column. (8) Remove the supporting arm plastic knob, 7R03672 (fig. 2), of the burner housing assembly by loosening the setscrew in the knob and unscrewing the knob. Replace supporting arm plastic knob and tighten setscrew in knob. (9) Remove the hexagon nut, flat washer, and spacer bushing from the other end of the supporting arm, 7R03672 (fig. 2). Attach burner housing assembly to supporting arm by placing the end of the supporting arm through the center of the fork, 7R03678 (fig. 2) ; replace spacer bushing, washer, and hexagon nut. Draw up hexagon nut tightly. (10) To place the burner in the burner housing, proceed as follows: (a) Loosen the battery terminal thumb nuts, SR00401 (fig. 3), on the burner clips, 7R03690 (fig. 3). (b) Slide the end of the burner with the flexible wire lead into the right-hand burner clip, and push it through far enough so that the opposite end of the burner clears the other burner clip. (c) Slide the burner back so that it is evenly spaced in the two burner clips, and tighten the battery terminal thumb nuts. (d) Attach the flexibl e wire lead from the burner to the binding post on the reflector near the right-hand burner clip. (e) Remove the protective paper covering from the burner. Do not touch the quartz tube with the fingers. d. Assembling the General Electric model. (1) Set the base assembly on its four casters. (2) Make up the upright assembly by placing the adjustable upright spring, 7R03948 (fig. 4). inside the stationary upright, 7R03942 (figs. 4 and 5). Press the flanged end of the adjustable upright, 7R03944 (figs. 4 and 5), against the spring and force it about halfway into the stationary upright. Slip the stationary upright collar, 7R03946 (fig. 4), over the adjustable upright, and fasten it to the stationary upright by tightening the setscrews provided. Lock the adjustable upright by tightening the adjustable upright locking knob, 7R03950 (fig. 5). (3) Place the bottom of the upright assembly in the socket of the cast iron base and tighten the Allen head setscrews with the Allen setscrew wrench, SR00333 (fig. 6). provided. (4) Attach the supporting arm, 7R03952 (fig. 5), with the burner housing attached, by slipping it over the end of the adjustable upright. Line up the holes in the supporting arm with those at the end of the adjustable upright. Fasten the supporting arm in place by tightening the two fillister head screws provided. (5) Insert the cor;l burner hook. 7R03938 (fig. 5), into the hole on the under side of the supporting arm, and secure it in place by tightening the setscrews provided. (7) Set the steel tape measure, 7R03988 (fig. 6), in operating position by pulling out the steel tape and placing it in the slot of the burner housing directly below the tape reel (fig. 7 (4) ). e. Assembling the Hanovia model. (1) Slip the casters into the sockets on the bottom of the cast iron base, 7R04252 (fig. 8). Set the base assembly on its four casters. (2) Lock the carriage (fig. 8 (22) ) on the upright tube, 7R04304 (fig. 8), of the upright assembly by tightening the vertical carriage locking knob, 7R04280 (fig. 8). (3) Raise the upright assembly so that the bottom end may be placed in the hole provided in the base cover plate, 7R04214 (fig. 8). Lower the upright assembly until it seats. (4) Remove the two screws located at the extreme end of the burner housing rail (fig. 8 (25) ) of the burner housing assembly. Insert the burner housing rails, 7R04316 (fig. 8), horizontally into the wheel track of the carriage (fig. 8 (22) ) until the screw holes project on the opposite side of the carriage. Replace the two screws and tighten. If the burner housing rail does not move freely, loosen the rail-locking knob, 7R04322 (fig. 8). (5) To install the burner, proceed as follows: (a) Place the burner, 7R04336 (fig. 9), in the burner supports (fig. 9 (3) ) by grasping the metal end of the burner with the right hand in a position such that the fitting seal and the slotted metal fittings (fig. 9 (5) ) are toward the lamp. W ith the left hand push and hold to the left the left-hand burner support (fig. 9). Insert the right end of the burner into the right-hand burner support, -taking care that the right slotted metal burner fitting engages the Y-shaped guide. Fit the left-hand burner support over the left end of burner. Release the left-end support and then the burner. (b) Insert the burner pin leads (fig. 9 (7) ) into their respective porcelain terminal blocks, 7R04346 (fig. 9). (c) Grasp the burner end shield, 7R04338 (fig. 9), with the hand and place the fingers near the flanged edges. Slip the burner end shields over the ends of the burner and the beaded leads. Squeeze the flanged edges of the shield together with the fingers and insert the end burner shield flanges into the opening in the lamp reflector. Release the fingers so that the flanges engage the reflector. f. Prestarting instructions. (1) Clean the burner and reflector as outlined in paragraphs 22 and 23. Burner housing, Hanovia model—bottom view. current supply source, determine the actual voltage at the receptacle through the use of a voltmeter, and make certain that both voltage and frequency correspond to that stamped on the nameplate. The lamp is adjusted at the factory for operation on 115-volt supply. If the supply voltage differs from this value by more than plus-or-minus 4 volts, the lamp will give better service if adjustment is made for the supply voltage. A terminal board with voltage adjustment taps is provided on the transformer located in the base assembly. W hen making voltage adjustment, it is only necessary to change one wire—the line connections to the transformer terminal board. (3) With the line toggle switch in the “off” position, check to see that the burner clips are tight and burner leads are properly connected. (4) Both patient's and operator’s eyes should always be protected by wearing protective ultraviolet spectacles, Item No. 7139000, or X-ray operator’s goggles, Item No. 6031000. Failure to do so may result in an uncomfortable or dangerous case of conjunctivitis. 7. USED EQUIPMENT. To prepare used or reconditioned therapeutic lamps for operation, proceed exactly as for new equipment. (See par. 6.) Section III. CONTROLS AND INSTRUMENTS 8. CONTROLS a. Burdick model. T he Burdick model has a line toggle switch in the center of the cover plate on the base housing. This switch is marked “on” and “off”. b. General Electric model. The “on” and “off” switch on this model is of the foot treadle type. The ‘‘off” position is away from the white dot marked on the base housing. c. Hanovia model. (1) Line toggle on this model is marked “on" and “off,” and is located in the center of the base housing. (2) Rotary starting switch. The rotary starting switch is located adjacent to the line toggle switch on the base assembly. 9. INSTRUMENTS. The therapeutic lamp employs no instruments. Section IV. OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS 10. STARTING INSTRUCTIONS, a. Snap the line toggle switch to the “off” position. (1 ) Line toggle switch on the Burdick model, 7R03638 (tig. 14), is marked “on” and “off”. (2 ) For line toggle switch on the General Electric model (fig. 6(1)) the “off” position is away from the white dot. (3 ) Line toggle switch on the Hanovia model, 7R04210 (fig. 8), is marked “on” and “off". b. Connect burner line plugs. Ground General Electric model lamp by removing one screw holding the outlet faceplate and screw in the ground plug (fig. 5 (2) ). If the conduit system is not grounded, then provide a separate ground. c. Close burner housing shutters. 20 d. Snap the line toggle switch to the "on" position. A while clot on the base of the General Electric model indicates the “on" position. e. When a bluish glow is observed in the quartz burner tube, the lamp has started. If the bluish glow is not observed in the Hanovia model, twirl the rotary starter switch, 7R04208 (fig. 8), slowly until it is started. f. After the lamp has started, allow approximately 4 minutes for it to build up to its full operating intensity. The burner tube will then appear as a very brilliant narrow cord of blue light. Open the burner housing shutters. The lamp is then ready for use. 11. EXTINGUISHING INSTRUCTIONS. Snap the line toggle switch to the “off’' position. 12. EXTINGUISHING AND RELIGHTING INSTRUCTIONS, a. Do not try to relight the lamp immediately after it has been extinguished. 1 he burner must cool to a temperature at which the discharge can be reestablished. Wait approximately 6 minutes before relighting. b. If the lamp is to be employed for a number of successive applications, it is recommended that it be continued in operation instead of being turned off after each treatment. 13. LAMP MANIPULATING INSTRUCTIONS, a. Burdick model. (1) To rotate housing about its horizontal axis, loosen the plastic friction locking lever, 7R03680 (fig. 3), adjust to desired position, and tighten the friction locking lever. (2) To rotate the burner housing about its vertical axis, turn the burner housing fork. 7R03678 (fig. 2), to the desired position. (3) To adjust the height of the burner housing, loosen the vertical track locking knob, 7R03656 (fig. 2), move the burner housing assembly up or down to the desired position, and tighten the vertical track locking-knob. (4) To adjust the horizontal position of the burner housing, loosen the burner housing supporting arm locking knob, slide the supporting arm in or out to the desired position, and tighten the burner housing supporting arm locking knob. b. General Electric model. (1) To angulatc the burner housing to any position from the vertical to horizontal, loosen the locking stud lever, 7R03956 (fig. 5), adjust to the desired position, and tighten the locking stud lever. (2) To adjust the height of the burner housing, loosen the adjustable upright locking knob. 7R03944 (fig. 5), move the burner housing assembly up or down to the desired position and tighten the upright locking knob. 21 c. Hanovia model. (1) To move the burner housing on its horizontal axis, loosen the trunnion locking knob, 7R04360 (fig. 8), adjust to the desired position and tighten the trunnion locking knob. (2) To rotate the burner housing on its vertical axis, loosen the rail supporting block locking knob, 7R04322 (fig. 8), turn to desired position, and tighten the rail supporting block locking knob. (3) To adjust the height of the burner housing, loosen the vertical carriage locking knob, 7R04280 (fig. 8), move the carriage (fig. 8 (22) ) up or down to the desired position, and tighten the vertical carriage locking knob. (4) To adjust the horizontal position of the burner housing, loosen the burner housing rail locking knob, 7R04298 (fig. 8), slide the rails in or out to the desired position, and tighten the burner housing rail locking knob. 14. MEASURING THE DISTANCE BETWEEN BURNER AND PATIENT. Use the steel tape measure located on the burner housing. The intensity of ultraviolet radiation varies inversely as the square of the distance between the burner and the patient. For example, moving the patient a distance of 30 to 15 inches from the lam]) makes the radiation four times as intense, rather than twice as intense. Moving the patient three times closer would make the radiation nine times as intense. If this principle is not constantly borne in mind when positioning the patient, severe burns may result from moving him a short distance closer to the lamp. 22 CHAPTER 3 MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS Section I. GENERAL 15. SCOPE. Chapter 3 contains information for the guidance of the personnel of the using organization responsible for the maintenance (1st and 2nd echelon) of this equipment. It also contains information needed for the performance of the preventive maintenance service and replacement of burners. Section II. LUBRICATION 16. BALL BEARINGS. Wear on these bearings is negligible, ft is not necessary to lubricate them. Keeping them clean and free of dust and dirt is all that is necessary. Section III. PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE SERVICES 17. OPERATOR MAINTENANCE (1ST ECHELON), a. Weekly. (1) Clean the burner. (2) Clean the reflector. (3) Dust the entire lamp thoroughly, particularly the ball bearings. b. When lamp is put in operation for the first time, returned from repair, or a new burner'is installed. (1) Clean the burner. (2) Clean the reflector. 18. ORGANIZATIONAL MAINTENANCE (2D ECHELON). Replace burner when necessary. Section IV. TROUBLE SHOOTING 19. IF LAMP FAILS TO LIGHT, a. Check current source to see that it agrees with the voltage and cycle data stamped on the nameplate of the lamp. 23 b. Check current source to see that current is available at the receptacle into which the lamp line cord is plugged. c. Check line fuse to see that it is intact and of the proper amperage. d. Burdick model only. (1) Snap the line toggle switch to the “on” position. (2) Test to determine if current is reaching the burner, by placing a 300-volt a-c voltmeter across the burner clips. A normal “no load” voltage reading will be approximately 250 to 260 volts. If there is no voltage at the burner clips, snap the line toggle switch to the “off” position. (3) Make the thermal switch. 7R03716 (fig. 14), accessible by unfastening the screws holding the front panel cover plate, and removing the front panel cover plate. 7R03618 (fig. 2). (4) Tighten the thermal switch in its socket, 7R03636 (fig. 14), by rotating it slightly clockwise. (5) Snap the line toggle switch to the “on” position and test for current at the burner clips as described above. If there is no voltage at the burner clips, remove thermal switch and replace it with a new one. 20. IF THE LAMP LIGHTS AND IMMEDIATELY EXTINGUISHES ITSELF. I f the lamp lights and immediately extinguishes itself, it is likely that a. fuse in the electric supply circuit has blown. In the event that this is the cause of operating failure, replace fuse. 21. IF BURNER FAILS TO REACH NORMAL BRILLIANCY OR GOES OUT. I he burner should be replaced if it fails to reach normal brilliancy or goes out and does not light after being in use over a period of time. Section V. MAINTENANCE OPERATIONS 22. CLEANING BURNER. To clean the burner, snap the line toggle switch to the “off position, moisten a small piece of clean cloth with either acetone (Item No. 1003000), carbon tetrachloride (Item No. 1127000), or ethyl alcohol (Item No. 1048000), gently wipe the quartz tube with the moistened cloth, and dry with a clean cloth. Never use rubbing alcohol. I he cleaning solvents are listed in the order of their preference. If these solvents are not available, distilled water may be used. The burner should not be removed for cleaning. DO NOT ALLOW the fingers to come in contact with the quartz tube at any time. In the event that they do, clean as directed above. 23. CLEANING REFLECTOR. I o clean the reflector, snap the line toggle switch to the “off” position, wipe lightly with a clean cloth slightly moistened with water, and dry with a soft clean cloth. 24 24. REPLACEMENT OF BURNER, a. Remove the spent burner by carrying out the assembling instructions in reverse. (See par. 6.) (1) Burdick model. See paragraph 6c (10). (2) General Electric model. See paragraph 6d(6). (3) Hanovia model. See paragraph 6c(5). b. Install the new burner by carrying out the assembling instructions as referred to in a above. Section VI. PACKING AND STORAGE 25. DISASSEMBLING. To disassemble the lamp, carry out the assembly instructions for the respective models (par. 6c, d, and e) in reverse. 26. PACKING AND STORING, a. Disassemble the lamp into the base assembly, upright assembly, and burner housing assembly, with the burner in the burner clips. b. Wrap each assembly in heavy protective paper. Place each assembly in a sturdily constructed wooden box of suitable size. Use sufficient bracing and packing material to protect the parts in shipment and prevent the movement of parts within the boxes. Nail the lids in place on the boxes and band with steel strapping.
