TURKISH LANGUAGE GUIDE
Turkish is spoken by about 15 million people in Turkey and by another million in the neighboring countries of Bulgaria, Greece, Cyprus and Syria. This Language Guide will enable you to ask directions, buy things or order a meal wherever Turkish is spoken. Knowing a little Turkish will also help you get along with the people, for they will naturally be pleased to see a stranger showing enough interest in them to try to speak their language.
How to Use the Records and Guide
This Guide is not intended to give you a complete command of the Turkish language. For a thorough course, write to the United States Armed Forces Institute, Madison, Wisconsin. This handbook will, however, enable you to carry on simple conversations in the language.
The records that go with this Guide give you a number of the most important words and phrases in Turkish. Read the section called Hints on Pronunciation and then listen to the records until you know the Useful
5
YOU HAVE TO USE YOUR
EARS EVEN MORE THAN
Words and Phrases by heart. Repeat each word out loud right after you hear it and say it exactly the way the Turkish speaker does. Imitate the pronunciation as closely as you can, just as you might mimic someone who has an unusual accent. Try to get every detail of the pronunciation, even the rhythm and intonation. Follow the words in your Guide but use them only as a reminder; if you hear something different from what you see written, go by what you hear. Remember that you can’t get the sound of a language from the printed word alone—you have to use your ears even more than your eyes. If you don’t have the records and can’t get a Turkish speaker to read the words,
6
you will have to rely on the Hints on Pronunciation alone.
By the time you have practiced the Useful Words and Phrases several times, you will know what sound each letter stands for in the Guide. You will then be able to pronounce the Additional Expressions even though you have not actually heard them, and you will be able to form sentences of your own by using the section called Fill-in Sentences.
Hints on Pronunciation
All the tvords and phrases are written in a spelling which you read like English. Each letter or combination of letters is used for the sound it usually stands for in English and it always stands for that sound. Thus, oo is always pronounced as it is in too, boot, tooth, roost, never as anything else. Say these words and then pronounce the vowel sound by itself. That is the sound you must use every time you see oo in the Pronunciation column. If you should use some other sound—for example, the sound of oo in blood or in door —you might be misunderstood.
7
SYLIables that are pro-
NOUNCED LOUDerthan
OTHers are WRITten in CAPital LETters.
Like this :
columbus.... ko-LUM-buss
NEW YORK....noo - YAWRK PHILADELPHlA.fil-a-DEl fee a ATLANTA.....at LAN-ta
DENVER......DEN vur W
Syllables that are accented—that is, pronounced louder than others—are written in capital letters. Curved lines (^) are used to show sounds that are pronounced together without any break; for example, LffYOOT-fen meaning “please.”
Special Points
Here are a few points to note as you listen to the records:
Al stands for the sound in aisle, ice, bite.
Example: BAI meaning “Sir.”
AY as in day, play, may, only not drawled
as in English. It may sometimes sound like the e in let. Examples: NAY-red-ay
Al LIKE THE SOUND IN BITE z
“AY" as in DAY, PLAY, MAY
DON'T DRAWL/ CUT IT SHORT/
meaning “where,” say-KEEZ meaning “eight.”
U or UH stands for a sound we don’t have in English. To make it round your lips as though to say oo and without moving them say the f-sound in met. Example: dun meaning “turn.”
THAT BUGLER IS
THE ONLY ONE .
WHO SAYS ITX1 RIGHT/
EW
IH
G
stands for another sound we don’t have in English. To make it round your lips as though to say oo and without moving them say the z-sound of pit. Example: gewn meaning “day.”
To make this sound spread your lips as though about to say ee and without moving them say the 00-sound of book. Example: ahl-TIH meaning “six.” stands for an Z>-sound at the end of a syllable. Example: ka^,h-VEH meaning “coffee.”
as in get, give, go, never as in gee. Example: HAHN-gee ta-RAHF-tihr meaning “which way.”

USEFUL WORDS AND PHRASES
The following is the exact wording of the Turkish language records issued with this Guide.
These records give you a few useful phrases in Turkish. To learn to say these phrases so that you will be understood, imitate the sounds exactly as you hear them. You will hear the English first, followed by the Turkish; then repeat the Turkish out loud and say it good and loud. Remember! Repeat every Turkish phrase right after you hear it.
In the Turkish Language Guide which should be used with these records, all the phrases you will hear are written both in Turkish spelling and in a simplified spelling which you read like English. Don’t use the Turkish spelling unless you have studied Turkish before.
Listen to the records six or seven times and you will know the phrases by heart.

FILL-IN SENTENCES
In this section you will find a number of sentences, each containing a blank space which can be filled in with any one of the words in the list that follows. For example, to say “I want some soap” look for the phrase I want—” in the English column and find the Turkish expression given beside it:___ee-STEE-
yo-room. Then look for “soap” in the list that follows; the Turkish is sa-BOON. Put the word for soap in the blank space and you get sa-BOON ee-STEE-yo-room.
Notice that the order of words in Turkish is often different from the order in English. For example, instead of saying “I want some soap” and “Do you have a pencil?” what you really say in Turkish is Soap I want” and “A pencil do you have?”
