1. Icelanders in America.—a. In the tenth century the Viking Biarni sailed along the American coast having been blown off his course from Iceland to Greenland. He did not land but was probably the first white man to see America. On his information Leif Ericson, a native Icelander, sailed to America in the year 1000 and established a temporary settlement probably along the New England Coast. Longfellow’s poem, “The Skeleton in Armor,” recognizes the event. The first white child born in this country was probably Inorri Thorfinnsson, an Icelander, born in 1004.
b. In modern times Icelanders have settled in the United States, Canada, and Brazil. At the present time the only real settlements of Icelanders outside of Iceland are in the United States and Canada. These settlements are largely confined to North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Utah, and in the vicinity of Boston and Seattle. In Canada there are many settlements in the prairie provinces but the largest is at Winnipeg where two Icelandic newspapers are printed.

In 1930 when Iceland observed the one thousandth anniversary of its congress the United States presented them with a statue of Leif Ericson. At the World’s Fair in New York the Iceland exhibit caused wide comment.
2. Iceland.—a. Iceland was settled by adventurous Norwegian Vikings in the year 874. They came to the new land in small, open boats with their families, serfs, servants, and household goods. The difficulties of settlement were enormous but in the unexplored territory of glaciers, volcanic mountains, torrential rivers, waterfalls, and geysers, they established their bases. The winters were long and severe, but in a short time fishing became common while farming was practiced where the soil permitted.
b.	The groups of families were organized democratically. Once a year there was a general meeting of all free men at a congress or “Althing” on the Thingvellir plains near Reykjavik. Here laws were made, disputes settled, and legal decisions, purchases, and marriages announced. The first meeting for the whole country was held in 930, long before any other country had anything like a congress. Slavery disappeared peacefully (about 1100), the slaves earning their freedom legally by extra work or being set free by their masters as a reward for outstanding services. In order to preserve a united country Christianity was adopted by general vote about the year 1000. The people were very proud and jealous of their bravery and honesty and blood feuds resulted from real or fancied insults. In these fights (arising over land, cattle, or fishing rights, but always involving honor) there were many examples of great personal bravery, but the unfortunate destruction of some of the leading families naturally weakened the country internally.
c.	Iceland was independent the first few hundred years, but in the thirteenth century joined Norway. Some centuries later it was attached to Denmark, and the King of Denmark became the King of Iceland. Lately local affairs have been entirely in the hands of Icelanders, who continued the democratic traditions of the first settlers. Iceland is now an independent Republic.
d.	Fishing, sheep raising, and farming are still the chief occupations of the Icelanders. The people have remained independent in their outlook, hard-working, and proud of their history and culture. Their language has changed little since the period of settlement. The great sagas, the histories and family stories, written centuries ago are the favorite reading of men, women, and children throughout the country. There is no illiteracy and crime is practically unknown. Iceland holds an enviably high position among nations when judged by the stand

ards of peaceful culture and civilized living. She is a neighbor with whom any other nation should consider it an honor to collaborate.
e.	Icelanders are hospitable and eager to talk to foreigners. Their desire to learn about the world is keen, and when they ask questions it is because of this desire. In return they are glad to impart whatever they know. With even a limited supply of words, a visitor can have very profitable conversations with them. He will be treated as a welcome guest and will receive a warm greeting so long as he observes the ordinary social amenities.
3.	General usage of Icelandic.—a. Accent.—All words are accented on the first syllable.
b.	Alphabet —The Icelandic alphabet consists of 33 letters. These letters together with the usual pronunciations follow:

au—there is no exact English equivalent for this combination; it is pronounced somewhat like “oi”.
d.	General rules to observe.—(1) In Icelandic several words are often joined together to produce one word. Thus “Reykja-vik” we would say as “smoky-bay.” The meaning of such words becomes apparent when split into their syllables.
(2)	Icelanders use polite phrases at every opportunity. “Please” is “Gerib l>er svo vel” (would you be so kind). “Thank you” is “]?akka ybur fyrir” (thank you for). “Excuse me” is “FyrirgeficS mer’ (forgive me).
(3)	It is well to say the above whenever opportunity presents.
(4)	Drinking is a ritual in Iceland. No one drinks before the host picks up his glass and says “skal” and “ velkominn.” Everyone replies “skal” (scowl) and drinks. No woman can drink unless some man “skals” to her.
(5)	Icelandic boys take their father’s first name with the addition of the suffix “son.” Thus Stefan Jonsson’s son would become Einar Stefansson and his daughter would be Helga Stefansddttir. When married she is known as Fru Helga Stefansdottir.
(6)	There are two forms of address, the formal and the familiar. The formal is used in this booklet. The negative is formed by addition of the word “ekki.”

4.	A word about grammar.—a. Practice is the best way to learn collect form. Icelanders put the word “the” after a word, not before it as we do. If “litis” alone means “house” then “htisib” means the house. Three forms for “the” are: masculine, “-inn,'” feminine, “-in;” and neuter “-ib.” For instance if a word ends in ui the the ending is “-inn”: “mabur-inn” means “the man.”
b. Nouns vary according to the way they are used in sentences. Thus htisinu means “to the house” and “husanna” means “of the houses.”
C- Adjectives also differ m their ending. “Gobur” (good) is used for masculine; “gob” for feminine; and “gott” for neuter.
d. (1) Verbs show changes of tense as in English. Some add “-di,” “-ti,” or “-bi” to show past action, as we add “-ed.” Examples:
