The National Endowment for the Arts, established by Congress in 1965 as 
an independent Federal agency, is the official arts organization of the 
United States Government. It is dedicated to supporting excellence in 
the arts, both new and established; bringing the arts to all Americans; 
and providing leadership in arts education.
Through its grants and programs, the Arts Endowment brings great art to 
all 50 States and 6 U.S. jurisdictions including rural areas, inner 
cities, and military

bases. The Arts Endowment awards competitive matching grants to 
nonprofit organizations, units of State or local government, and 
federally recognized tribal communities or tribes, for projects, 
programs, or activities in the fields of arts education, dance, design, 
folk and traditional arts, literature, local arts agencies, media arts, 
museums, music, musical theater, opera, presenting, theater, and visual 
arts. In addition, it awards competitive nonmatching individual 
fellowships in literature and honorary fellowships in jazz and the folk 
and traditional arts. Forty percent of the Arts Endowment's funds go to 
the 56 State and jurisdictional arts agencies and their 6 regional arts 
organizations in support of arts projects in thousands of communities 
across the country.
