The Central Imagery Office (CIO) was established on May 6, 1992, and 
operates under DOD Directive 5105.56. The Office ensures that Government

intelligence, mapping, charting and geodesy, and other needs for imagery 
are met effectively and efficiently in a manner conducive to national 
security, consistent with the authorities and duties of the Secretary of 
Defense and the Director of Central Intelligence. It provides support 
functions to the Department of Defense, the Central Intelligence Agency, 
and other Federal departments and agencies on matters concerning imagery 
relating to national security.
