Bureau of Prisons: Recent Concerns and Challenges for the Future
(Testimony, 06/08/95, GAO/T-GGD-95-177).
In response to congressional concerns about, and challenges to, the
Bureau of Prisons and correctional systems across the country, GAO's
federal corrections work during the past eight years has focused on the
following four areas: prison crowding; options for expanding prison
capacity; privatization; and health care--including drug treatment.
This testimony briefly describes the challenges and the issues
confronting the Bureau of Prisons, recaps GAO's key findings and
recommendations on these matters, and highlights concerns for the
future.
