[Federal Register Volume 63, Number 247 (Thursday, December 24, 1998)] [Notices] [Page 71267] From the Federal Register Online via the Government Publishing Office [www.gpo.gov] [FR Doc No: 98-34140] ----------------------------------------------------------------------- DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE Bureau of the Census [Docket No. 981211302-8302-01] Service Annual Survey AGENCY: Bureau of the Census, Commerce. ACTION: Notice of Determination. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- SUMMARY: In accordance with Title 13, United States Code, Sections 182, 224, and 225, I have determined that 1998 data on total receipts and total revenue and expenses for selected service industries are needed to provide a sound statistical basis for the formation of policy by various governmental agencies and that these data also apply to a variety of public and business needs. Selected service industries include personal, business, automotive, repair, amusement, health, social, and other professional service industries. These data are not publicly available from nongovernment or other governmental sources. FOR FURTHER INFORMATION CONTACT: Ruth A. Bramblett, Chief, Current Services Branch, Service Sector Statistics Division, on (301) 457-2766. SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION: The Census Bureau is authorized to conduct surveys necessary to furnish current data on subjects covered by the major censuses authorized by Title 13, United States Code. This survey will provide continuing and timely national statistical data on selected service industries for the period between economic censuses. The next economic census is in 2002. This survey will yield 1998 estimates for the aforementioned industries. The data collected in this survey will be within the general scope and nature of those inquiries covered in the economic censuses. The Census Bureau needs reports from only a limited sample of service firms in the United States. The probability of a firm's selection is based on receipts or revenue size (estimated from payroll). The sample will provide, with measurable reliability, national level statistics on receipts of taxable firms and revenue and expenses of firms and organizations exempt from federal income taxes. We will mail report forms to the firms covered by this survey and require their submission within 30 days after receipt. This survey has been approved by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), under OMB approval Control Number 0607-0422, in accordance with the Paperwork Reduction Act, Pub. L. 104-13. We will provide copies of the forms upon written request to the Director, Bureau of the Census, Washington, DC 20233. Based upon the foregoing, I have directed that an annual survey be conducted for the purpose of collecting these data. Dated: December 14, 1998. Kenneth Prewitt, Director, Bureau of the Census.
