[Federal Register Volume 63, Number 185 (Thursday, September 24, 1998)] [Notices] [Page 51060] From the Federal Register Online via the Government Publishing Office [www.gpo.gov] [FR Doc No: 98-25596] ======================================================================= ----------------------------------------------------------------------- DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE Department of the Air Force Record of Decision (ROD) for the Disposal and Reuse of Chanute Air Force Base (AFB), Illinois On April 28, 1998, the Air Force issued the Fourth Revised Supplemental Record of Decision (FRSROD) for the Disposal and Reuse of Chanute AFB, Illinois. The decisions included in this FRSROD have been made in consideration of, but not limited to, the information contained in the Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS) for the Disposal and Reuse of Chanute AFB, filed with the Environmental Protection Agency and made available to the public on July 19, 1991. Chanute AFB closed on September 30, 1993, pursuant to the Defense Base Closure and Realignment Act of 1990, Pub. Law. 100-526 (10 U.S.C. 2687 note) and the recommendations of the Defense Base Closure and Realignment Commission. The FEIS analyzed potential environmental impacts of the Air Force's disposal options by portraying a variety of potential land uses to cover a range of reasonably foreseeable future uses of the property and facilities by others. The Air Force issued a ROD on July 21, 1992 which documented a series of decisions regarding the intended disposal of Government-owned property. Since that time the Air Force has modified the decisions in the ROD four times. This FRSROD modifies certain decisions made in the ROD and its supplements, thus completing the disposal decisions for Chanute AFB. The Air Force has decided to modify the method of disposal for Parcel O, and clarify the disposal of the phone system, roads, and rights of way. The implementation of these conversion activities and associated mitigation measures will proceed with minimal adverse impact to the environment. This action conforms with applicable Federal, State and local statutes and regulations, and all reasonable and practical efforts have been incorporated to minimize harm to the local public and the environment. Any questions regarding this matter should be directed to Mr. John P. Carr, Program Manager at (703) 696-5546.
