Task Force on the Future of the Goals; Meeting

AGENCY: National Education Goals Panel.

ACTION: Notice of Meeting.

SUMMARY: This notice sets forth the date and location of a forthcoming 
meeting of the Task Force on the Future of the Goals. This notice also 
describes the functions of the National Education Goals Panel and the 
Task Force on the Future of the Goals.

DATE AND TIME: Saturday, August 1, 1998 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

SUMMARY: The National Education Goals Panel (NEGP) was established to 
monitor, measure and report state and national progress toward 
achieving the eight National Education Goals, and report to the states 
and the Nation on that progress. The authorizing legislation for the 
National Education Goals and the Goals Panel are expected to expire in 
1999. At its February, 1998, meeting, the Panel decided to form a Task 
Force to make recommendations on the future of the Goals after the year 
2000.

AGENDA ITEMS: The meeting of the Task Force on the Future of the Goals 
is open to the public. Agenda items will include: (1) A review of the 
charge to the Task Force; (2) Presentations by Governor Roy Romer, (D), 
Colorado and Chester E. Finn, of the Hudson Institute, on the History 
of why the Goals were established, expectation for the Goals and the 
Panel and Recommendations, possibilities for the future; (3) Staff 
Responses to Panel Requests; (4) a Panel discussion on the future of 
the Goals and next steps for the Panel; and (5) the Panel will receive 
a commissioned paper on Grading State Standards.
