Submission For OMB Review; Comment Request

    DOC has submitted to the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) for 
clearance the following proposal for collection of information under 
the provisions of the Paperwork Reduction Act (44 U.S.C. chapter 35).
    Agency: Bureau of the Census.
    Title: 1997 Economic Census Covering the Wholesale Trade Sector.
    Form Number(s): Various.
    Agency Approval Number: None.
    Type of Request: New collection.
    Burden: 634,400 hours in FY 1998; 1 hour in FY 1996&7.
    Number of Respondents: 540,000.
    Avg Hours Per Response: 1 hour and 10 minutes.
    Needs and Uses: The economic census is the primary source of facts 
about the structure and functioning of the Nation's economy and 
features unique industry and geographic detail. Economic census 
statistics serve as part of the framework for the national accounts and 
provide essential information for government, business and the general 
public. The 1997 Economic Census will cover virtually every sector of 
the U. S. economy including more than .5 million wholesale 
establishments. The information collected from businesses in this 
sector of the economic census will produce basic statistics by kind of 
business for number of establishments, sales, payroll, and employment. 
It also will yield a variety of subject statistics, including sales by 
merchandise line, sales by class of customer, and other industry-
specific measures.
    Affected Public: Businesses or other for-profit, individuals or 
households, not-for-profit institutions, state, local or tribal 
government.
    Frequency: Every 5 years.
    Respondent's Obligation: Mandatory.
