ACTION: Notice of availability. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- SUMMARY: The document ``Sustainable Industry: Promoting Strategic Environmental Protection in the Industrial Sector, Phase 1 Report'' is available to the public. This report outlines the progress made to date in developing policy options that will improve environmental and economic performance in the metal finishing, photoimaging, and thermoset plastic industries. Hard copy and microfiche copies of the report can be purchased through the National Technical Information Service (NTIS). Ordering information is provided. DOCUMENT DESCRIPTION: The Sustainable Industry Project represents a new approach to development of environmental policy for industry. The project is based on the premise that environmental policies for the industrial sector in the 1990s must be developed from a thorough understanding of the complex set of characteristics and decision-making factors that are unique to individual industrial sector or sub-sectors. Working with industries, states, non-governmental organizations, and other interested parties, EPA intends to design policies that will protect the environment and human health while fostering competitive and sustainable industries. The primary goal of the Sustainable Industry Project is to develop, test, and implement industry-specific policy recommendations that will remove barriers to innovation and promote strategic environmental protection. The Phase 1 Report details the selection of the three industries, the development of a network of ``stakeholders'' for the project, identification of the key drivers and barriers that influence environmental performance in each industry, and selection of the policy options that will effect changes in that performance.
