Public Information Collection Requirement Submitted to OMB for 
Review

AGENCY: Department of State.

ACTION: The Department of State has submitted the following public 
information collection requirement to OMB for review and clearance 
under the Paperwork Reduction Act of 1980, 44 U.S.C. Chapter 35.

SUMMARY: Under the Refugee Act of 1980, persons who have fled their 
country of origin and cannot return because of a well-founded fear of 
persecution may apply at selected embassies abroad for refugee status 
in the U.S. The law requires that successful refugee applicants be 
sponsored by private non-profit voluntary agencies for the initial 
period of resettlement in the U.S. (8 USC 1522(b)), and the sponsoring 
agencies need biographical information on each applicant in order to 
place him/her in an appropriate resettlement site. The following 
summarizes the information collection proposal submitted to OMB:

Originating office--Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration
Title of information collection--Refugee Biographic Data Sheet
Frequency--On occasion.
Respondents--Aliens seeking refugee status in the U.S.
Estimated number of respondents--120,000
Average hours per response--\1/2\ hour.
Total estimated burden hours--60,000.

    44 U.S.C. 3504(h) does not apply, as no rulemaking is being 
conducted in connection with this information collection.
