Administration of Donald J. Trump, 2026
September 13, 2026
The President. Well, thank you very much. This was an honor. And Shane played unbelievable.
Audience members. Yeah!
The President. You know, I went back last night, and I was watching some of the news, and they were showing him—nine putts in a row. And I thought that was best-of, meaning over the years. [Laughter] Just one putt after another. I guess it was nine in a row. And he was unbelievable. But he also hit the ball really well too. A lot of other things.
But he's a great guy, and what happened—I shouldn't say this, but I was with Shane last night. And he's got an infectious personality, and we were talking. Rory was there. A lot of people were there. And I said, "You know, I'm supposed to leave this morning"—I was supposed to be out of here this morning—"but I'm going to stay and watch Shane win," and he did win. He did win. That's dangerous. I said, "Shane, I'm going to stay and watch you win."
A lot of people don't handle that very well, but he handled it. And you know, on the first hole the people went crazy. I was—everyone's going crazy. He hits a perfect drive, a great second shot, and he makes a birdie. Who does that? Nobody does that.
Audience member. Shane Lowry does!
The President. So he can handle pressure.
I do want to say, though, that, on behalf of my son Eric and the whole Trump family, this is an honor. We're so proud. The whole Doonbeg and, frankly, Ireland itself has been so incredible, so inviting. And we're very honored by presenting you with a great course. It's been great.
I want to mention one thing. Taoiseach and I talked about it, and Shane talked about it. And everybody's been bugging me. They're saying: "Would you do me a favor? It's so unfair what's going on. Could you possibly take the tariffs off of Irish whiskey?" [Applause]
And I said, "On behalf of the United States of America, I am going to take the tariffs off of Irish whiskey." [Applause]
Thank you. Shane—great job, Shane. Thank you, everybody.
