Administration of Donald J. Trump, 2026
April 7, 2026
Vice President James D. "J.D." Vance. Thank you. Thank you. Wow.
Audience members. J.D.! J.D.! J.D.!
Vice President Vance. Thank you. Please. Please.
So, before I started my remarks, I actually had a special guest that asked that I give him a phone call, and we'll see—let's hope he actually answers, or this is going to be very embarrassing.
All right.
[At this point, Vice President Vance made a telephone call, and it went to voicemail.] Okay. I'll try it one more time. [Laughter]
I get a good signal here.
It's ringing. That's progress.
Hello, Mr. President. How are you?
[The President joined Vice President Vance's remarks in Budapest, Hungary, by telephone from the White House.]
President Trump. Hi. Hey, J.D.
Could you give me a second? I'm just——
Oh. Wow. That's some—that's some crowd you have there, J.D.
Vice President Vance. Mr. President, you are on with about 5,000 Hungarian patriots——
President Trump. [Inaudible]
Vice President Vance. ——and I think they love you even more than they love Viktor Orbán. [Laughter]
President Trump. Well, I can't believe that. I can't believe that, because I love Hungary and I love that Viktor. I'll tell you, he's a fantastic man. We've had a tremendous relationship, and he does a job.
Remember this: He didn't allow people to storm your country and invade your country like other people have and ruin their countries, frankly. He's kept your country good. He's kept Hungarian people in your country, and he's done a fantastic job.
And let me tell you, I like him a lot, but if I didn't think he did a good job, I wouldn't be making a call like this.
But, boy, that sounds like a big crowd, and that sounds like my kind of people.
Vice President Vance. That's right.
President Trump. What a crowd! J.D. must have made a very good speech to get this kind of a response. I guess—how did J.D. do? Did he give a good speech, everybody? [Laughter.]
Vice President Vance. It's very early, sir.
President Trump. It's early. [Laughter] Okay.
Well, I just want to tell you, I'm a big fan of Viktor. I'm with him all the way. The United States is with him all the way, and it's a real honor to talk to you. You're really incredible people with great enthusiasm and brilliance, because you're brilliant people, and I really love it.
You have a man that kept your country strong, and he kept your country good, and you don't have problems with—all of the problems that so many other countries have because they let their countries be invaded, and you don't have that problem because of Viktor Orbán. That's the only reason you don't have that problem. There was a lot of pressure on him to do it, and those other countries made big mistakes.
So I wish you a lot of luck, and I love you all. Vice President Vance. Thank you, Mr. President. President Trump. Thank you.
Vice President Vance. Well, that's obviously a tough act to follow, but I'm going to do my best because we have got to get Viktor Orbán reelected as Prime Minister of Hungary, don't we?
[Vice President Vance continued his remarks.]
NOTE: The President spoke at approximately 5:35 p.m. by teleconference from the White House. The transcript released by the Office of Communications also included a translation of the remarks of Prime Minister Orban and the full remarks of Vice President Vance.
