According to La. R. S. 214.23 (9), "Fastlands are lands surrounded by publicly owned, maintained orotherwise validly existing levee 's, or natural formations ... or as may be lawfully constructed in the future, which levees or natural formations would normally prevent activities ... within the surrounding area from having direct and significant impacts on coastal waters." The fastland areas within this database and as depicted on the Fastland Atlas have not all been field verified as fastlands. Individual field verification may be necessary on a case-by-case basis to determine the fastland status of particular areas. 'Me categories within this database include; name, identification number, parish, section/township and range, USGS 1:24,000 scale quadrangle map number, 1988 aerial iriftared photograph number, latitude and longitude, US Fish and Wildlife Cowardin et al (1979) Habitat codes, and area. Fastlands were named according to their location. The numbers contain the first dim letters of the parish in which they are located. The locational information is obvious as to origin. The habitat data was derived from the USFWS 1978 Habitat Maps and uses the Wicker (1980) modified Cowardin et al (1979) wetland habitat nomenclature. The possible fastland areas were placed on USGS quadrangle maps and then digitized into a Data General Aviion computer using Infocad.
