propertY of CSC Library U.S. DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE NOA~ COASTAL SERVICES CENTER 2234 SOUTH HOBSON AVENUE CHARLESTON, SC 29405-2413 WASHINGTON STAT E DOEPARTM T M N E C O L O G Y Resource Guide to Wetland Scientists of the Pacific Northwest Shorelands and Coastal Zone Management Program Wetlands Section Mail Stop PV-11 Olympia, WA 98504 (206) 459-6774 May 1988 #88-2 Resource Guide to Wetland Scientists Introduction The Washington Department of Ecology began creating the Wetland Data Base for the Pacific Northwest in the Spring of 1986 after sponsoring the conference entitled "Wetland Functions, Rehabilitation and Creation in the Pacific Northwest: The State of our Understanding". The conference became the springboard for assembling a list of wetland experts that could be consulted by other scientists as well as land use planners. The scientists that attended that meeting became the core group that has since expanded to include the names of over 200 wetland experts. These individuals come from many different fields, including plant ecology, wildlife and fisheries sciences, limnology, and hydrology. The Wetland Data Base has been organized into two parts: (1) The Resource Guide to Wetlands Scientists that contains the names and areas of expertise of wetland scientists throughout the Pacific Northwest and (2) The Wetlands Bibliography of Technical Literature for the Pacific Northwest. The Bibliography currently contains over 750 individual citations of wetland literature pertaining to the Pacific Northwest. While still not complete the Database is already proving to be useful to private consultants and governmental agencies. The purpose of the Resource Guide is to facilitate communication between wetland scientists, planners, and governmental agencies. Persons listed in the Resource Guide may be called upon should questions arise in their areas of expertise. The intent is to provide planners and resource managers with sound scientific ad- vice on which to base their decisions. Because of the nature of this project, it is vital that we keep abreast of any changes of phone, address, or research areas of all participants in the project. Ecology would also like to include the names of additional scientists with expertise in Pacific Northwest wetlands in the Resource Guide. Persons interested in being listed in the Resource Guide should call or write to: Wetlands Section Shorelands and CZM Program Washington Department of Ecology Mail Stop PV-11 Olympia, WA 98504 (206) 459-6774 iii HOW TO USE THIS BOOKLET The Resource Guide to Wetland Scientists is divided into three sections: 1) Directory, 2) Expertise Index, and 3) Person I.D. Index. Together, they make it possible to locate experts from many areas of wetland research. The Directory is composed of entries for all of the participating wetland scientists. The entries, alphabetized by last name, include the following information: 1) Name, 2) Person I.D. Number, 3) Agency, 4) Address, 5) Research, 6) Library, and 7) System and Function Codes. A sample entry follows: Bog Ph.D., Dr. Peat ID # 992 Northern College 100 Acidwater Sphagnum, WA 98502 (206) 459-6774 RESEARCH: This category includes a summary of the person's research and a description of their expertise. LIBRARY: This category contains a list of the size type and availability of libraries and data bases at the individual's disposal. The codes are defined as follows: 400 Marine 500 Estuarine 600 Freshwater Impounded 700 Riparian 999 General Wetlands FUNCTION CODES refer to the wetland functions in which the individual has expertise. The codes are defined as follows: Hydrology 1. Ground Water Recharge 2. Ground Water Discharge 3. Flood Storage and Desynchronization Sedimentology 4. Shoreline Anchoring 5. Sediment Trapping Water Quality 6. Physical Filtration 7. Biochemical Processing v Carbon/Detritus 8. Carbon/Detritus Cycling Primary Producers 9. Productivity 10. Diversity 11. Complexity Consumer Support 12. Breeding/Rearing 13. Feeding/Foraging 14. Refuge 15. Migration Creation/Restoration 16. Wetland Creation 17. Wetland Restoration The Expertise Index (pages 75 - 81) is an index which allows the user to access the I.D. numbers of individuals with specific areas of expertise. The index is divided up by systems - Marine, Estuarine, Freshwater Impounded, Riparian, and General Wetlands. Within each system is the list of wetland function codes (see above). Each function code is followed by a list of the I.D. numbers of individuals with expertise in that system and function. The Person I.D. Index (pages 83 - 89) is a list of the Person I.D. numbers (in ascending order) and the corresponding names of the experts. To identify individuals with specific expertise, it is necessary to use all three sections of this book. For example, to find indi- viduals with expertise in the restoration of riparian wetlands you would do the following: 1) Look up the function code number for wetland restoration in the list of function codes on page 89 (Wetland Restoration = Function Code "17"); 2) Locate the Riparian section of the Expertise Index on page 80; 3) Find the number "17" in the function code column and note the Person I.D. numbers which follow (2, 8, 11, 16, ...222); 4) Refer to the Person I.D. Index on pages 85 - 89 and look up the names of the individuals with these I.D. numbers. (e.g. I.D. # 2 = Richard Wheeler) 5. Refer to the Directory for more information on each individual. vi - Table of Contents- Introduction ................................iii How to Use This Book ..........................v Table of Contents ...........................vii Directory ......................................1 Expertise Index ...............................75 Person I.D.
