VETTER NATIONAL ACADEMY OF SCIENCES Washington,D.C. 1970 COVER: Detail from an illustration showing how navigation was taught in a seventeenth century Dutch school of navigation from The Light of Navigation by Blaeu, 1622 Standard Book Number 309-01766-1 Available from Printing and Publishing Office National Academy of Sciences 2101 Constitution Avenue Washingt9n, D.C. 20418 Library of Congress Catalog Card Number: 75-605859 PREFACE This collection of sources of information about oceanography is compiled for teachers, students, and the many others interested in this complex, interesting, and recently popular subject. It com- bines two pamphlets printed in July and November 1965 that were used to answer the many inquiries received by the Commit- tee on Oceanography of the National Academy of Sciences. This book divides "sources" into places to which one can write in search of information and publications that can be found in libraries or obtained through the mail. Many of the publications listed are available from the places listed. To reduce the bulk of this book, abbreviations of places are used extensively in the section on publications; the reader should check the places section for complete addresses. Most of the agencies, laboratories, and organizations listed in the first section will provide free material describing their pro- grams and activities. However, please do not send form letters asking for "everything you have about oceanography." Some, in- cluding this writer, respond only reluctantly, if at all, to such re- quests. Personal letters, describing the writer's particular field of interest, stating what he plans to do with the information re- quested, and saying that he has at least checked the references in his local library before resorting to stamp and pen, will get better resu Its. Comments on the usefulness of the listings in this book and suggestions for additions or deletions will be appreciated. Thanks are due to the many individuals who verified or cor- rected the entries for their organizations and to those listed below N PREFACE who have added to the usefulness of this compilation by helpful suggestions, additions, and criticism. The Committee operates under the joint sponsorship of the Office of Naval Research, the Atomic Energy Commission, the Department of the Interior, the National Science Foundation, the Environmental Science Services Administration, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Today, a truly comprehensive list would contain at least twice as many names. In fact, several such tabulations have been prepared,* including the following: Hydrospace Buyers Guide Oceanology International YearbooklDirectory Ocean Master Offshore Drilling & Construction Contractor's Directory UST Handbook World Space Directory The pages that follow omit many major industries that have a relatively small direct involvement in oceanography and highlight others that are heavily committed in this field. While this compila- tion is not a "Who's Who" in ocean industry, it does list many of the small, specialized ocean industries and most of the larger in- clustries. *See Publications Section for addresses, prices, etc. 2 OCEANOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SOURCES A ACCO-AMERICAN CHAIN & CABLE COMPANY, 1110 East Princess Street, York, Pa. 17403. Educational materials about oceanography are available from many of these organizations, as described in the following section, and most of the organizations publish technical material, journals, or special reports. Some of these are listed in the Section on Scientific and Technical Journals. Initials in parentheses following each address identify the organ- izations whose full names and addresses are spelled out elsewhere in this book. Though they are common shorthand designations, these initials are not part of the formal addresses at the organizations. When writing to any of the organizations, the most satisfactory response can be expected if it is clear that the writer has a special interest in the material requested and has not sent a "shot- gun" request to a "shopping list" of agencies asking for "all the information you have about oceanography." Be specific and show that you have done some homework about the topic of interest before you resort to stamp and pen. A return-addressed, stamped, business-letter-size envelope will usually be appreciated. Full addresses of the organizations identified by initials are'in the previous section.
