MOMENT OF SILENCE HONORING MARTIN SHIELDS, JR.
(Mr. THOMPSON of Mississippi asked and was given permission to
address the House for 1 minute.)
Mr. THOMPSON of Mississippi. Mr. Speaker, I am joined by my
colleagues from Mississippi mourning the tragic loss of Mississippi's
Hinds County Deputy Sheriff Martin Shields, Jr., a dedicated public
servant who gave his life in the line of duty late Sunday night while
responding to a domestic call.
Deputy Shields, just 37 years of age, devoted his career to
protecting and serving the people of Mississippi.
Before joining the Hinds County Sheriff's Office, he served with
distinction in the Jackson Police Department, Jackson State University
Police Department, and the Ridgeland Police Department.
At every step, Deputy Shields wore his badge with dignity, courage,
and a commitment to justice. Beyond the uniform, he was a husband,
father, and friend, respected by his coworkers and his community.
Deputy Shields leaves behind a grieving wife and a 12-year-old
daughter, who must now navigate life without him.
This tragic loss is a solemn reminder of the risks law enforcement
officers take daily to protect us. We must continue to advocate for the
resources, support, and protection needed to ensure that they can do
their jobs safely.
Mr. Speaker, I ask that we now observe a moment of silence in honor
of Deputy Martin Shields, Jr.
