PROTECTIONS FOR PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES
(Ms. PORTER asked and was given permission to address the House for 1
minute and to revise and extend her remarks.)
Ms. PORTER. Mr. Speaker, our healthcare system and social service
programs were not designed with all people in mind.
For decades, people with disabilities have been overlooked and
ignored. They have faced barriers to receiving healthcare such as
discrimination and inaccessible medical equipment that have led to
poorer health outcomes. Negative bias and discrimination against people
with disabilities has no place in our healthcare system.
After 50 years of tireless advocacy by the disability community, the
Department of Health and Human Services has finally strengthened civil
rights protections for people with disabilities.
The Biden administration's new rule brings us closer to fully
realizing protections under current law by prohibiting discrimination
on the basis of disability and getting all Americans healthcare that
meets their individual needs. I am proud to celebrate this achievement
and the remarkable advocacy of the disability community that made it
possible.
