SALUTING ISSUES THAT ARE IMPORTANT DURING BLACK HISTORY MONTH
(Ms. JACKSON LEE asked and was given permission to address the House
for 1 minute and to revise and extend her remarks.)
Ms. JACKSON LEE. Mr. Speaker, I rise to salute Black History Month.
The month of February is the time that we spend on issues and icons and
heroes and sheroes that have contributed to the history of America and
to the African-American community.
Throughout this month, I will talk about great heroes and sheroes,
but at the same time, I will raise topical issues that are very
important to us.
I will first acknowledge the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, an
enormously important legislative fix on the criminal justice system
that all of America rallied around, thousands and thousands, maybe
millions marched, because we came together as a Nation to be able to
address the fairness in that system. That means that we were against
the choke hold being a part of the system of law enforcement; no-knock
not being a part of law enforcement; providing more funding to ensure
that there was training and professional development to our law
enforcement community; and to instruct our communities as well to be
better.
At the same time, we have a stop human trafficking bill at school
zones because human trafficking impacts the African-American community.
These are issues that affect all of us, but I want them to be noted
this month as we work together during Black History Month.
