GUN LEGISLATION
(Ms. JACKSON LEE asked and was given permission to address the House
for 1 minute and to revise and extend her remarks.)
Ms. JACKSON LEE. Mr. Speaker, last school year was a deadly year for
so many of our children going to school in America. School shootings
shocked the very core of Americans and communities across the country.
As we approach the beginning of school, this Congress has passed no
gun safety legislation, no universal background check, no banning of
assault weapons, no holding parents responsible for children getting
guns.
Although I understand that there are many discussions about school
security, the proliferation of guns is one of the issues that
contributes to the dangers that our children face.
We know that the Second Amendment guarantees the right to bear arms,
but there is nothing in the Second Amendment that does not allow us to
have sensible gun safety legislation.
It is time for us to recognize that a Nation that has more guns than
citizens can stand down in order to provide a safe educational climate
for our children.
Are they not our most precious resource? It is time to act now.
