RECOGNIZING DR. ANTHONY ATALA
(Ms. FOXX asked and was given permission to address the House for 1
minute.)
Ms. FOXX. Mr. Speaker, today, I rise to recognize Dr. Anthony Atala,
director of the Wake Forest Institute of Regenerative Medicine.
Dr. Atala is the leader of a team of scientists at Wake Forest
Baptist Medical Center who have proved the feasibility of using a
sophisticated, custom-designed 3-D printer to create living tissue
structures to replace injured or diseased tissue in patients.
The team has been able to print ear, bone, and muscle structures
that, when implanted in animals, were able to mature into functional
tissue and develop a system of blood vessels. Early results indicate
that the structures have the right size, strength, and function for use
in humans, and the team aims to implant bio-printed muscle, cartilage,
and bone in patients in the future.
We are fortunate to have Dr. Atala and his team conducting this
pioneering research that may change the face of modern medicine in
North Carolina's Fifth District.
