                  MEASURE READ THE FIRST TIME--S. 2024

  Mr. REID. Mr. President, I understand S. 2024 is at the desk and due 
for its first reading.
  The PRESIDING OFFICER. The clerk will read the bill by title for the 
first time.
  The legislative clerk read as follows:
       A bill (S. 2024) to amend Chapter 1 of Title 1 United 
     States Code with regard to the definition of marriage and 
     spouse for Federal purposes and to ensure respect for State 
     regulations of marriage.
  Mr. REID. Mr. President, I ask for a second reading of the bill, but 
for the purpose of placing the bill on the calendar under rule XIV, I 
object to my own request.
  The PRESIDING OFFICER. Objection having been heard, the bill will be 
read for a second time on the next legislative day.
