DAY TWELVE
(Mr. BERA of California asked and was given permission to address the
House for 1 minute.)
Mr. BERA of California. Day No. 12--Mr. Speaker, today is the 12th
day of a government shutdown and 1 day closer to defaulting on our
debt. In the history of our great Nation, we have never failed to pay
our bills. We are Americans. We always pay our bills.
Mr. Speaker, enough with the gamesmanship, the finger-pointing, the
name-calling. It is time to get back to business. We can do it in three
easy steps.
Step one: let's open the government.
Step two: let's pay our bills.
And step three: let's negotiate a real budget that begins to rebuild
jobs and an economy that rebuilds middle class America.
Mr. Speaker, everyone wins--especially the American people.
