RECOGNIZING MR. GREGORY J. HARBAUGH
______
HON. MARK STEVEN KIRK
of illinois
in the house of representatives
Thursday, April 29, 2010
Mr. KIRK. Madam Speaker, I rise to honor a 10th District resident who
has experienced what only a handful of Americans have gone through. Mr.
Gregory J. Harbaugh of Wilmette logged over 800 hours in space as an
astronaut for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. A
graduate of Purdue University, Mr. Harbaugh began his career supporting
flight operations from Mission Control at the Johnson Space Center in
Houston.
In August 1988, Mr. Harbaugh became an astronaut and went on to
participate in four space flights. During those flights, he spent more
than 18 hours in extravehicular activity outside of the spaceship. For
his service, Mr. Harbaugh received the NASA Distinguished Service
Medal, four NASA Space Flight Medals, the NASA Exceptional Service
Medal, and the NASA Exceptional Achievement Medal.
Mr. Harbaugh's explorations are invaluable to the advancement of
science. I wish him all the best in his future endeavors.
