                              NOMINATIONS

Mr. REID. Mr. President, I have spent a lot of time today with the
President's Chief of Staff, Josh Bolten. I have said before, he is a
very pleasant man. We worked for a long time today trying to work
ourselves through the nominations. I think we made great progress. I
think we have teed things up to do even more when we come back after 2
weeks.
To show my good faith, when Mr. Bolten said he wanted to work with
us, I approved Mr. Filip, who the Attorney General said was very
important to him. Judge Filip left a Federal judgeship and is now
acting as the Attorney General's Chief of Staff, for lack of a better
word.
So we have made progress. And even through this that we have done
today, I, in good faith, threw in some people I thought were important,
even though we did not have them done--and that was not part of the
original deal--and that was to confirm the head of the Internal Revenue
Service. But we have done that.
