TRIBUTE TO AN ACADEMY AWARD WINNER FOR DOCUMENTARY

Mr. PELL. Mr. President, I salute today an exceptional filmmaker and
Rhode Island native, Alice M. Maurice, who has been recognized by the
Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as associate producer of
1994's best short subject documentary.
Ms. Maurice's commitment to excellence in filmmaking has not only
brought her and the State of Rhode Island honor, but has made a
positive difference in the lives of women throughout the United States.
Her documentary film, ``Defending Our Lives,'' details the suffering of
eight abused women who killed their assailants in self defense. Ms.
Maurice's film draws attention to an important subject which deserves
such national recognition.
I ask that my distinguished colleagues join me in saluting this
remarkable woman, a truly accomplished artist and filmmaker.
