    <main style="-uslm-dtd:legis-body"><longTitle><docTitle style="-uslm-dtd:legis-type">AN ACT</docTitle><officialTitle style="-uslm-dtd:official-title">To direct the Director of the National Science Foundation to support research on opioid addiction, and for other purposes.</officialTitle></longTitle><enactingFormula style="-uslm-dtd:enacting-clause">Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled,</enactingFormula>
        <section style="-uslm-dtd:section" identifier="/us/sComp/116/335/s1" styleType="OLC">
            <num style="-uslm-dtd:enum" value="1">SECTION 1. </num><heading style="-uslm-dtd:header">SHORT TITLE; FINDINGS. </heading>
            <subsection style="-uslm-dtd:subsection" identifier="/us/sComp/116/335/s1/a" styleType="OLC">
                <num style="-uslm-dtd:enum" value="a">(a) </num><heading style="-uslm-dtd:header">Short Title.—</heading><content style="-uslm-dtd:text">This Act may be cited as the “<shortTitle style="-uslm-dtd:quote">Expanding Findings for Federal Opioid Research and Treatment Act</shortTitle>” or the “<shortTitle style="-uslm-dtd:quote">EFFORT Act</shortTitle>”. </content>
            </subsection>
            <subsection style="-uslm-dtd:subsection" identifier="/us/sComp/116/335/s1/b" styleType="OLC">
                <num style="-uslm-dtd:enum" value="b">(b) </num><editorialNote style="-uslm-dtd:usc-reference" role="uscRef"><b>[</b><ref href="/us/usc/t42/s1862u">42 U.S.C. 1862u note</ref><b>]</b> </editorialNote><heading style="-uslm-dtd:header">Findings.—</heading><chapeau style="-uslm-dtd:text">The Congress finds that— </chapeau>
                <paragraph style="-uslm-dtd:paragraph" identifier="/us/sComp/116/335/s1/b/1" styleType="OLC">
                    <num style="-uslm-dtd:enum" value="1">(1) </num><content style="-uslm-dtd:text">research gaps currently exist in the prevention and treatment of opioid addiction; </content>
                </paragraph>
                <paragraph style="-uslm-dtd:paragraph" identifier="/us/sComp/116/335/s1/b/2" styleType="OLC">
                    <num style="-uslm-dtd:enum" value="2">(2) </num><content style="-uslm-dtd:text">the National Science Foundation’s research on opioid addiction has increased understanding of the neuroscience of addiction, substance abuse intervention, the role of illicit supply networks, the secondary effects on families, the use of technology to address the opioid epidemic, and options for alternative, non-addictive therapeutics for pain; and </content>
                </paragraph>
                <paragraph style="-uslm-dtd:paragraph" identifier="/us/sComp/116/335/s1/b/3" styleType="OLC">
                    <num style="-uslm-dtd:enum" value="3">(3) </num><content style="-uslm-dtd:text">the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health have recognized that fundamental questions in basic, clinical, and translational research would benefit greatly from multidisciplinary approaches and collaboration. </content>
                </paragraph>
            </subsection>
        </section>
        <section style="-uslm-dtd:section" identifier="/us/sComp/116/335/s2" styleType="OLC">
            <num style="-uslm-dtd:enum" value="2">SEC. 2. </num><editorialNote style="-uslm-dtd:usc-reference" role="uscRef"><b>[</b><ref href="/us/usc/t42/s1862u">42 U.S.C. 1862u</ref><b>]</b> </editorialNote><heading style="-uslm-dtd:header">NSF SUPPORT OF RESEARCH ON OPIOID ADDICTION. </heading>
            <content style="-uslm-dtd:text" class="block">  The Director of the National Science Foundation, in consultation with the Director of the National Institutes of Health, shall support merit-reviewed and competitively awarded research on the science of opioid addiction. </content>
        </section>
    </main>
