    MARK KELLY, Democrat, of Tucson, AZ; born in Orange, NJ, February 
21, 1964; raised in West Orange; education: B.S., marine engineering and 
nautical science, United States Merchant Marine Academy, 1986; M.S., 
aeronautical engineering, United States Naval Postgraduate School, 1994; 
naval aviator, United States Navy, 1986-2011, attaining the rank of 
captain; flew 39 combat missions in the First Gulf War in 1991; 
graduated from U.S. Naval Test Pilot School in June 1994 and logged more 
than 5,000 hours in more than 50 different aircraft and has 375 aircraft 
carrier landings; awards: Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of 
Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross among others; joined NASA as a member 
of the Astronaut Corps in 1996, flying four missions into space, 
commanding two shuttle missions, and made four trips to the 
International Space Station; awards: NASA Exceptional Service Medal and 
NASA Space Flight Medal; family: married to former U.S. Representative 
Gabby Giffords; children: Claire and Claudia Kelly; religion: Catholic; 
committees: Armed Services; Energy and Natural Resources; Environment 
and Public Works; Joint Economic Committee; Special Committee on Aging; 
elected to the U.S. Senate in a special election on November 3, 2020, to 
fill the vacancy caused by the death of John McCain, a seat subsequently 
held by appointed senators Jon Kyl and Martha McSally, for the term 
ending January 3, 2023, and took the oath of office on December 2, 2020.
