\1\ Senator Akaka was appointed April 28, 1990, to fill the vacancy
caused by the death of Senator Spark M. Matsunaga, and took the oath
of office on May 16, 1990; subsequently elected in a special election
on November 6, 1990, for the remainder of the unexpired term;
subsequently elected to a full term in 1994.
\2\ Senator Barrasso was appointed on June 22, 2007, to fill the vacancy
caused by the death of Senator Craig Thomas. He took the oath of
office on June 25, 2007; subsequently elected in a special election on
November 4, 2008.
\3\ Senator Brown won a special election on January 19, 2010, to fill
the vacancy caused by the death of Senator Edward M. Kennedy. Brown
took the oath of office on February 4, 2010, replacing appointed
Senator Paul G. Kirk, Jr.
\4\ Senator Conrad resigned his term from Class III after winning a
special election on December 4, 1992, to fill the vacancy caused by
the death of Senator Quentin Burdick. Senator Conrad's seniority in
the Senate continues without a break in service. He took the oath of
office on December 15, 1992.
\5\ Senator Feinstein won the special election held on November 3, 1992,
to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Senator Pete Wilson.
She took the oath of office on November 10, 1992. She won the seat
from Senator John Seymour who had been appointed on January 7, 1991.
She was elected to a full term in 1994.
\6\ Senator Gillibrand was appointed on January 23, 2009, to fill the
vacancy caused by the resignation of Hillary Rodham Clinton. She took
the oath of office on January 27, 2009; subsequently elected in a
special election on November 2, 2010.
\7\ Senator Heller was appointed on May 3, 2011, to fill the vacancy
caused by the resignation of John Ensign. He took the oath of office
on May 9, 2011.
\8\ Senator Hutchison won the special election on June 5, 1993, to fill
the vacancy caused by the resignation of Senator Lloyd Bentsen. She
took the oath of office on June 14, 1993. She won the seat from
Senator Bob Krueger, who had been appointed on January 21, 1993. She
was elected to a full term in 1994.
\9\ Senator Manchin won a special election on November 2, 2010, to fill
the vacancy caused by the death of Senator Robert C. Byrd, Manchin
took the oath of office on November 15, 2010, replacing appointed
Senator Carte P. Goodwin.
\10\ Senator Menendez was appointed on January 17, 2006, to fill the
vacancy caused by the resignation of Senator Jon S. Corzine; He took
the oath of office on January 18, 2006; subsequently elected to a full
term in November 2006.
\11\ Senator Wicker was appointed on December 31, 2007, to fill the
vacancy caused by the resignation of Trent Lott. He took the oath of
office on December 31, 2007; subsequently elected in a special
election on November 4, 2008.
