    BARBARA A. MIKULSKI, Democrat, of Baltimore, MD; born in Baltimore, 
July 20, 1936; education: B.A., Mount St. Agnes College, 1958; M.S.W., 
University of Maryland School of Social Work, 1965; former social worker 
for Catholic Charities and city of Baltimore; served as an adjunct 
professor, Department of Sociology, Loyola College; elected to the 
Baltimore City Council, 1971; Democratic nominee for the U.S. Senate in 
1974, winning 43 percent of vote; elected to the U.S. House of 
Representatives in November, 1976; first woman appointed to the Energy 
and Commerce Committee; also served on the Merchant Marine and Fisheries 

Committee; became the first woman representing the Democratic Party to 
be elected to a Senate seat not previously held by her husband, and the 
first Democratic woman ever to serve in both houses of Congress; 
Secretary, Democratic Conference; first woman to be elected to a 
leadership post; committees: Appropriations; Health, Education, Labor, 
and Pensions; Select Committee on Intelligence; elected to the U.S. 
Senate in November, 1986; reelected to each 
succeeding Senate term.
