\1\ Senator Akaka was appointed April 28, 1990, to fill the vacancy
caused by the death of Senator Spark M. Matsunaga, and took the oath
of office on May 16, 1990; subsequently elected in a special election
on November 6, 1990, for the remainder of the unexpired term;
subsequently elected to a full term in 1994.
\2\ Senator Barrasso was appointed on June 22, 2007, to fill the vacancy
caused by the death of Senator Craig Thomas, and took the oath of
office on June 25, 2007.
\3\ Senator Conrad resigned his term from Class III after winning a
special election on December 4, 1992, to fill the vacancy caused by
the death of Senator Quentin Burdick. Senator Conrad's seniority in
the Senate continues without a break in service. He took the oath of
office on December 15, 1992.
\4\ Senator Feinstein won the special election held on November 3, 1992,
to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Senator Pete Wilson.
She took the oath of office on November 10, 1992. She won the seat
from Senator John Seymour who had been appointed on January 7, 1991.
She was elected to a full term in 1994.
\5\ Senator Gillibrand was appointed on January 23, 2009, to fill the
vacancy caused by the resignation of Hillary Rodham Clinton. She took
the oath of office on January 27, 2009.
\6\ Senator Hutchison won the special election held on June 5, 1993, to
fill remainder of the term of Senator Lloyd Bentsen. She took the oath
of office on June 14, 1993. She won the seat from Senator Bob Krueger,
who had been appointed on January 21, 1993. She was elected to a full
term in 1994.
\7\ Senator Kirk was appointed on September 24, 2009, to fill the
vacancy caused by the death of Edward M. Kennedy. He took the oath of
office on September 25, 2009.
\8\ Senator Menendez was appointed on January 17, 2006, to fill the
vacancy caused by the resignation of Senator Jon S. Corzine;
subsequently elected to a full term in November 2006.
\9\ Senator Wicker was appointed on December 31, 2007, to fill the
vacancy caused by the seat left vacant by the resignation of Trett
Lott. He took the oath of office on December 31, 2007; subsequently
elected in a special election on November 4, 2008.
