appointed by the Governor on December 27, 1982, to complete the 
unexpired term of Senator Nicholas F. Brady; elected to the U.S. Senate 
on November 2, 1982; reelected in 1988 and 1994; not a candidate for 
reelection in 2000; replaced Senator Robert Torricelli as the Democratic
