remainder of the term of Senator Bob Dole. He took the oath of office
on November 27, 1996. This seat was filled by Senator Sheila Frahm,
who had been appointed, ad interim, on June 11, 1996 by the Governor.
\2\ Senator Campbell changed parties March 3, 1995.
\3\ Senator Dorgan was elected to a 6-year term on Nov. 3, 1992, and
subsequently was appointed by the Governor Dec. 14, 1992 to fill the
vacancy caused by the resignation of Senator Kent Conrad.
\4\ Senator Miller was appointed on July 24, 2000, by the Governor of
Georgia, to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Senator Paul
Coverdell. He was then elected to finish the last 4 years of the term
on November 7, 2000.

\1\ Senator Akaka was appointed Apr. 28, 1990 by the Governor of Hawaii
to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Senator Spark M. Matsunaga,
and took the oath of office on May 16, 1990. He was elected in a
special election on Nov. 6, 1990, for the remainder of the unexpired
term.
\2\ Senator Jean Carnahan was appointed to the U.S. Senate by the
Governor of Missouri on December 4, 2000, effective on January 3,
2001. The Senate seat was declared vacant after her late husband Mel
Carnahan, still legally on the ballot, received the most votes against
Senator John Ashcroft on November 7, 2000.
\3\ Senator Lincoln D. Chafee was appointed on November 2, 1999, by the
Governor of Rhode Island, to fill the vacancy caused by the death of
Senator John H. Chafee. He was then elected to a full term on November
7, 2000.
\4\ Senator Conrad resigned his term from Class III after winning a
special election on Dec. 4, 1992, to fill the vacancy caused by the
death of Senator Quentin Burdick. Senator Conrad's seniority in the
Senate continues without a break in service. He took the oath of
office on Dec. 15, 1992.
\5\ Senator Feinstein won the special election held on Nov. 3, 1992, to
fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Senator Pete Wilson. She
took the oath of office on Nov. 10, 1992. This seat was filled,
pending the election, by Senator John Seymour who was appointed by the
Governor of California on January 7, 1991.
\6\ Senator Hutchison won the special election held on June 5, 1993, to
fill remainder of the term of Senator Lloyd Bentsen. She took the oath
of office on June 14, 1993. She won the seat from Senator Bob Krueger,
who had been appointed by the Governor of Texas on Jan. 21, 1993.
\7\ Senator Jeffords changed party affiliation from Republican to
Independent on June 6, 2001.
