RES. 683</legis-num><current-chamber>IN THE SENATE OF THE UNITED STATES</current-chamber><action display="yes"><action-date date="20260422">April 22, 2026</action-date><action-desc><sponsor name-id="S422">Mr. Welch</sponsor> submitted the following resolution; which was referred to the <committee-name committee-id="SSEV00">Committee on Environment and Public Works</committee-name></action-desc></action><legis-type>RESOLUTION</legis-type><official-title display="yes">Raising awareness of lake sturgeon.</official-title></form><preamble><whereas><text>Whereas lake sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens) are some of the largest North American freshwater fishes and can live for 150 years or longer;</text></whereas><whereas commented="no"><text> Whereas lake sturgeon are considered living fossils, as their lineage dates back to the time of dinosaurs, making them among the oldest fish species still in existence;</text></whereas><whereas commented="no"><text>Whereas lake sturgeon are slow to reproduce as they may not spawn until they are at least 10 to 30 years old, and they only spawn every 4 years on average;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas lake sturgeon are found across the Great Lakes, the Northeastern United States, and Southeastern Canada;</text></whereas><whereas commented="no"><text> Whereas lake sturgeon are bottom-dwelling fish that require extensive areas of shallow water to feed on a wide variety of organisms;</text></whereas><whereas commented="no"><text>Whereas historical overfishing, invasive species, and habitat degradation have caused declines in the population of local<italic></italic> lake sturgeon;</text></whereas><whereas commented="no"><text>Whereas many States list lake sturgeon as an endangered, threatened, or otherwise protected species;</text></whereas><whereas commented="no"><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">Whereas lake sturgeon serve an important role as an indicator of an ecosystem's health;</text></whereas><whereas commented="no"><text>Whereas lake sturgeon attract the attention of the public because of their large size and prehistoric body; </text></whereas><whereas commented="no"><text>Whereas many Federal agencies, States, Tribes, and local communities are collaborating on lake sturgeon management programs that are reestablishing healthy lake sturgeon populations; and</text></whereas><whereas commented="no"><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">Whereas lake sturgeon have cultural importance for many Indigenous communities, representing a traditional food source: Now, therefore, be it</text></whereas></preamble><resolution-body><section display-inline="yes-display-inline" section-type="undesignated-section" id="S1"><text>That the Senate encourages—</text><paragraph commented="no" id="ida9b68c79afb5411194c3decc9169bc32"><enum>(1)</enum><text>continued collaboration among Federal, State, Tribal, and other partners to manage and increase lake sturgeon populations across their extensive range;</text></paragraph><paragraph commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="id9d6b1f2438734d77a24decc1fb43df8e"><enum>(2)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">continued collaboration with Canada to jointly manage and increase lake sturgeon populations in our shared waters;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id5277aba9353743618ac5f1fb09ec795b"><enum>(3)</enum><text>continued efforts to identify, protect, and restore the habitat of lake sturgeon;</text></paragraph><paragraph commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="idc9d923e322454fc580f38a54bebead9b"><enum>(4)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">continued efforts to prevent and control the spread of invasive species and restore the reproductive habitat of lake sturgeon;</text></paragraph><paragraph commented="no" id="id9b0cff38ea6c4e76abc45c8455f4fc5d"><enum>(5)</enum><text>increased public awareness of lake sturgeon; and</text></paragraph><paragraph commented="no" id="id38ff418a8ce94ff28917ae56b7829c55"><enum>(6)</enum><text>the education of anglers and local communities on the proper ways to handle lake sturgeon if caught. </text></paragraph></section></resolution-body></resolution>
