<distribution-code display="yes">II</distribution-code><congress>119th CONGRESS</congress><session>2d Session</session><legis-num>S. 5394</legis-num><current-chamber>IN THE SENATE OF THE UNITED STATES</current-chamber><action><action-date date="20260914">September 14, 2026</action-date><action-desc><sponsor name-id="S331">Mrs. Gillibrand</sponsor> introduced the following bill; which was read twice and referred to the <committee-name committee-id="SSEV00">Committee on Environment and Public Works</committee-name></action-desc></action><legis-type>A BILL</legis-type><official-title>To prohibit the renaming of the Great Lakes, and for other purposes.</official-title></form><legis-body style="OLC" display-enacting-clause="yes-display-enacting-clause" id="H4159B8F836E14662BCAE762B32697E6F"><section section-type="section-one" id="H9E0E9AD5C7C242CFAB97E0107D15D8A5"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the <quote><short-title>Hands Off Our Great Lakes Act</short-title></quote>.</text></section><section id="HAB9182DC6E4943D2A1364DAF7A94C992"><enum>2.</enum><header>Prohibition of the renaming of the Great Lakes</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">Notwithstanding any other provision of law, the President, the Secretary of the Interior, and any officer or employee of the Federal Government acting under the authority of the President may not alter, change, redesignate, or otherwise rename the official geographic name of any of the following Great Lakes:</text><paragraph id="H61DEA09451F44D86AFAF4F28FDA76F57"><enum>(1)</enum><text>Lake Superior.</text></paragraph><paragraph id="HE6DF581623F74126A750BB98A4031B2A"><enum>(2)</enum><text>Lake Michigan.</text></paragraph><paragraph id="H68372CDBEB4848618CAA715ACE62A838"><enum>(3)</enum><text>Lake Huron.</text></paragraph><paragraph id="HA20F2ACECF294B2A9601622B60888201"><enum>(4)</enum><text>Lake Erie.</text></paragraph><paragraph id="HF16833FA0E064E9B81044819EFB53CFD"><enum>(5)</enum><text>Lake Ontario.</text></paragraph></section><section id="HA07DD240D5BD4429ACE2B8672D163CD2"><enum>3.</enum><header>Nullification of Executive Order 14422</header><subsection id="H2CEAE5729B2F42698ECCB1710587FD04"><enum>(a)</enum><header>In general</header><text>Executive Order 14422 entitled <quote>Honoring the American History of the Great Lakes and Renaming Lake Ontario as Lake America</quote> and issued on August 27, 2026, shall have no force or effect.</text></subsection><subsection id="HFA01F35B188B47BFB2991B864E9E847C"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Prohibition on implementation</header><text>The President, the Secretary of the Interior, and any officer or employee of the Federal Government may not issue, implement, administer, or enforce any Executive order, memorandum, proclamation, or other action issued for the purpose of carrying out—</text><paragraph commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="id7e4d48e8a1ea4c54a4243f3f4e3d9d28"><enum>(1)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">the Executive order described in subsection (a); or</text></paragraph><paragraph commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="id32bbab6f514549bcb099c353140cf6e3"><enum>(2)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">any substantially similar Executive order or action.</text></paragraph></subsection><subsection id="H75B36C8A213C4B91A688CA090D1B242B"><enum>(c)</enum><header>Prohibition on use of Federal funds</header><text>No Federal funds may be used, obligated, or expended to implement, administer, or otherwise give effect to—</text><paragraph commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="id118e4f14d175442387a24c83ec3260e2"><enum>(1)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">the Executive order described in subsection (a); or</text></paragraph><paragraph commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="idb39f3e1858a1496bb4f44a1f4c4ce702"><enum>(2)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">any substantially similar Executive order or action.</text></paragraph></subsection></section></legis-body></bill>
